I remember reading something about tamper indicators that some manufacturers put on the cable disconnect for the dial-type guages that is not really obvious to a perpetrator. This would probably explain the decrease in used car dealership rollbacks since the 80's. I think now, the digital ones would be close to impossible to alter. (I wonder if the ECM stores the mileage also?)

Anybody old enough to remember the '70's when the mileage guage only had 5 digits, because a car lasting 100k miles was a rarity back then....even on imports.

The ECU stores the mileage as well. Even if you stopped your counter on the dash, it could be reset at the dealership very easily.
