Tire Reviews

Postby NXRACER » Sun May 09, 2010 4:09 pm

i know im still a rookie but ive been trying to search around to see what tires you're all running & i think it'd be a great idea to have a sticky so everyone can post what tire they run why (performance, comfort, etc.) sizes, price, & how'd it feel /last, if they'd recommend it etc.
I think its a good idea to post in 1 place given the importance a tire can make & the competition between companies & the reviews i do see online are people w/ VASTLY diferent cars & cant be accurate.

i'll start:
92 camry 5sfe running Falken Sincera SN-828 (195/70R14) irun pressures between 40-38 street& 38/34 sport
+great factory replacement street tire, quiet but good road feel for occasionally slightly agressive" style
+decent wet traction
+inexpensive but not "cheap" @ about $50 or slightly less each
-dont let heat too much (driving too hard for too long, ex canyons or 100+ freeway runs) because temperature rating is "B" & speed is 118 max.

id recommend for a "mostly normal" daily driver that wants a modest tire upgrade.

- high speed isnt the most stable

99 Chrysler LHS
225/55R17
Michelin hydroedge
+ great traction in wet and dry
+ good stability at high speeds

Tires I've used in the past

Bridgestone Potenza RE902 - Stock tires from Toyota, 205/65/R15. Great tires but very soft side walls. Only got about 25k out of them before they were completely bald. Great all season tire.

Nankang NS-II - 225/40/R18 - Ok tires, I would never spend money on them again. I got allot of radial pull from these. I wore them out after 15k miles.

Federal SS-595 - 225/40/R18 & 225/45/R17 - If you do go with Federal please buy at your own RISK. The set of 18's I had no problems with. good Summer Tires but horrible wet traction. On the set of 17's I had horrible problems. I had 2 tirse bubble in the sidewall after 3 months of having them. Less then 5k miles on them. I took them off and got a whole new set. But like I said they are HIT and MISS type of tire.

Falken ST115 - 225/35/R19 - Good summer tires, bad in wet conditions. Miles are unknown since I sold the wheels before I even put 5k on those.

Toyo T1R - 235/35/R19 - Great tires in both Summer and wet condition. I had them on for about 7 to 8k miles before I sold them to someone here on the boards. I took them off when I got sponsored for some Dunlop Tires.

Dunlop SP9000 - 235/35/R19 - Great tires in both summer and wet conditions. I had put about 18k miles on them before I sold the wheels and the tires still looked new. Could have put another 10k miles on them without no problems but I sold the wheels.

Toyo Proxes 4 - 215/40/R17 - Great tires. I put about 20k miles on the set I had. Great summer and wet conditions.

Dunlop DZ101 - 215/40/R17 Best tires I had used to date. Great Summer and wet conditions. The set I had I put about 25k miles on them and sold them with still some thread left ont he wheels. I will buy these again.

Falken 512 - 205/60/R16 - Great all season tire. Wore down kind of quick for 16's. got about 20k miles out of them.

Current Tires
Falken 912 - 225/45/R17 - Great all season. Good in both dry and wet conditions. I've had them on for about 15k miles now. Good thread wear. Tires are bout half way in the front with about another 10k before replacement.

Next tires - will be Dunlop DZ101's again but in:
225/40/R18 front on 8.5" wide rim
235/40/R18 Rear on 9.5" wide rim

or

Yoko S Drive's
215/40R18 front on 8.5" wide rim
225/40/R18 rear on 9.5" wide rim

I would use a wider tire using dunlops due to the fact they have a natural curved sidewall compared to the S drives.

Personal experience (that I can remember) on Camry(258,000mi)/Solara(140,000mi)/Avalon(210,000mi)/ ES300(190,000mi) cars built from 95-00. Yes, there is one of each in the family.

17's

Nankang 225/45/17 NS-1 – Round, mostly. Very cheap summer tire. Rated M + S, terrible in snow.

Sumitomo HTR+ 225/45/17 – Not too bad. Decent all weather, and decent price. Got about 25K per set mostly highway.

Kumho 711 225/45/17 – Great cheap dry tire. Very bad if you get any kind of weather other than sun.

15's

Falken 512 205/65/15 – Great in every aspect other than wear. Will not even get close to the tread life.

Futura(Cooper) GTS 205/65/15 – Junk

Michelin Exalto 205/65/15 – Worth every penny. Smooth tires with great traction. Lasted every bit of the 50k advertised.

Michelin Primacy MXV4+ 205/65/15 – See Exalto, rated for 60k though. Not there yet, but looking very good.

Michelin Weatherwise I 205/65/15 – Wish Sear's still had these. Much better tire traction wise than Weatherwise II, outlast tread life significantly.

Kumho Solus 205/65/15 – Great value. Last well beyond tread life warranty. Decent all-weather traction. CHEAP! Not the most comfortable tires, but still a huge value.
I kid you guys not. I had a guy in the shop this last winter with a ride quality complaint on a set of these and they did have a little bit of a shimmy, so I was going to warranty them out for him. He had about 5/32ths left on the tires. Anyway, I couldn't warranty them because the had 48K miles on them. They're only warrantied as a 40k tire. I was like: Well sir, it seems they have already outlasted the warranty by 8,000 miles, and still have lots of tread left. I don't know what you want me to do.... anyway he left really happy.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

The 452's handle pretty good wet and dry . Milage isn't too bad . They will not be 30,000k tires but good performance tires are not going to last that long anyway . I'm running the Falken GT-615's . They are about half way done right now . 4,000K and been to the track for 3 adventures . Toyo R888's are my track tires now . Should get more milage out of the GT-615's .

I auto-x my cars and personally use either Bridgestone Re-111 or the Dunlop Direzza Star-Specs.

Both tires have great grip and not too bad in wet either.

I haven't had them, but 1 of my techs bought a set for his CRX. They were great until it snowed. I mean a slight dusting and he was ordering a different set. He said they were unsafe, to which I responded that they're only summer tires. He said he knew that, but didn't imagine that it was possible for tires to be that bad in the snow. Other than the snow he was very happy with them. He didn't have them on long enough to report wear.

I'm on my 2nd set of Invo's (235/35R19) and hands down the best performance tire i've owned yet. They have the excellent dry traction (cornering) and do just fine in the rain - although the solara is rarely out of the garage unless its sunny...

I've had my Solara for only 16 months and it
came with a nice set of Kumho ECSTA AST 215 55R 17's
which were good enough for me. They had excellent
rain traction and were smooth and quiet. Now I have
Michelin Primacy MVX4 215 55R 17 and they are even
better....quieter, smoother. The Michelin tread pattern,
however, is also quiet and not so aggressive looking as
you might want for a sports car, but they ride like a
luxury sedan. :D

Big fan of the Potenza RE960AS Pole Positions. On my third set. (Also running on my Supra...)

235/50/17's

- GREAT on wet (amazing 1st half of tread life)
- VERY good on dry
- SMOOTH and QUIET
- GOOD ride and "feel"
- GOOD handling
- NOT the cheapest... but worth it...
- FAIR wear... (I ride them hard and am very happy for the tread-life I have gotten! I'd border on saying GOOD tread life, but it all depends on what you expect. ANYTHING over 30k on any vehicle of mine is actually GREAT, and I've been exceeding that with these!)

I am probably going with MORE of these same tires when I go up another size on the Supra, which has my worn set of these on it now. Can't say enough about how well these have performed for me, and I go through a LOT of tires, and have used various brands and types. The USED 235/50/17's were WORLDS ahead of the BFG ZR's BRAND NEW in 255/55/16 on the Supra in wet, and almost as good on dry from a traction stance, NO comparison better on noise!
