Silenced mufflers...

Silenced mufflers...

Postby bigbirdSCed » Fri Feb 26, 2010 10:10 pm

so my exhaust had a big leak in it, a gaping 2" hole in the previous owners work. so time to upgrade. yall might have remembered me posting about exhust options that were quiet. well its looking liek building a catback will be more expensive then just buying one. It needs to be fairly quiet and it looks like the best choices are between the megan OE RS and Drift Spec.

i personally like the drift spec more, i just like the aggressive look. however the main question is with the removable silencer that it comes with. has anyone ever had experiance with these types of mufflers? does the silencer really quiet it down? and for thoes of you who have herd the OE RS, do ya think it would be comparable to that sound wise?

thanks for any help. im going tomarow to get a quote on a catback so well see how that goes.

that exhaust looks alot like my old JIC Spartan ST Exhaust.
If its the same sort of design then yes, those silencers work very very well. Mine was quieter than stock with the silencer in.

The only thing I have to warn you about is that with the silencer in, you create tons of restriction.. as it effectively bottlenecks the exhaust.

I'm going to try this instead, if I ever get my car running

Silencers are gay. That's my take.

I've seen a lot of exhausts with removable silencers, they make
it quiet. They also have a habit of making it sound like $hit.
On top of that, they also restrict the hell out your exhaust, as
Chunkz stated above. I personally would never run a silencer.
At least not by choice. Oh yeah, they look stupid too. :D
Trust me, I'm a technician.

thanks for the replys guys. obviously this is NOT by choice  , i am aware they sound like poopy and are restrictive, i always see them on ricers. but i have to get up at 5am and i dont want to wake the neighbors every day. if it does the job i dont really care how restrictive it is because im just driving to work, if i want to free up the exhause ill just remove it.

Im glad to hear they do work, anyone know how hard they are to remove?

Quite the contrary with my JIC my exhaust made no noise at all...
I wouldnt consider completely silent to be "poopy sounding" lol.

My silencer looked like a tube with a disc towards one end. The disc had a lip on it into which a bolt and nut went through. On the tip of my muffler, was a matching hole... so it was a 1 bolt operation. Simply put the silencer in the muffler, tube first, line up the holes and slide the bolt in, then use a wrench to tighten the nut that sits inside the muffler.

i think just stick with stock muffler, less restrictive than a silencer and not too much noise.

or get a muffler off a buick or something lol they're quiet.

yeah i got the drift spec too. I never put the silencer in, it actually makes it too quiet for me, pretty close to stock sounding with it in.

considering that im trying to at least upgrade my exhaust, going with anything stock would perminently restrict it. at least this can be removed and will accomplish the goal.

thats good to know, my experiance with silenced muffler is mostly with cheap mufflers on 4cyls that end up sounding bad...and not silent. im glad its that quiet. i think i may go with this option, it seemd to tackle each issue i have fairly well for a good price.

:D SC'd?!? is that the whiny thing at the back of the engine bay. i thought that was my Flux Capacitor.

knowing me, i will find some way to make removal of the silencer easier but this just sounds like a good solution to my problem.

why dont you use that ECV i posted a link of? Its awesome. Flick it open and closed from right inside the car.

I've yet to thoroughly test it though, but I'm sure it works.
