Exhaust sound vs. Power

Exhaust sound vs. Power

Postby MisterTedster » Sun Jan 24, 2010 1:28 am

No I'm not asking if a louder muffler equals more power. :drinking:

Actually, I'm wondering if for any given exhaust, like the TRD muffler, does a louder exhaust note mean more airflow, hence more power?

I ask because since I changed my cone filter to the fujita filter, the exhaust is louder and deeper, and best of all, I got my low-end grunt back on my sri!

That's right, using the Fujita filter gave me back my low-end torque with my obx (same as injen) sri.

Anyway, does anyone know about airflow vs. exhaust sound?

airflow and exhaust sound do not increase hand in hand.
Exhaust sound is a by product of flow through the muffler.

I've heard some very quiet exhausts make lots of power. Given example: My friend's DC2 GSR Made the most power with an Apex-i Noir exhaust system, and its rated below 98 dB.

An exhaust system with resonators wont necessarily restrict flow either, and resonators seem to quiet an exhaust down quite a bit.

Having that said my exhaust is 3" all the way thru, magnaflow muffler, no cat and dual resonators and it is loud as HELL hahaha

Tuning = should always be done.
Intake = nothing but sound + bling
Exhaust = nothing but sound + bling, but muffler only sounds like ***
Y-pipe/Merge = very important to mid/peak power
Cat = good thing to get rid of
Headers = Useless & horribly expensive
Cams = Useless & horribly expensive
Advanced Piggyback = great investment
Porting & Polishing = a bar none must have at some point for *any* setup

If you changed your intake filter and noticed an increase in sound, I'm pretty sure what your hearing is coming from the engine bay and NOT your exhaust.

Really though I'm surprised that changing just your filter changed the way it sounds...

Changing your entire intake, like going from stock to Injen would obviously change the sound because your getting rid of restriction and the silencer of the stock intake, but change in noise from just the filter? I don't belive it.

What's your theory behind this? So you're telling me that all the sg'ers on here with aftermarket headers just threw money away?

With exhaust sound and performance, there is good and then there is bad.

Those two don't always go together but most of the aftermarket exhaust will give you a louder noise, not necessarily throatier. Some exhaust sound good, like Magnaflow, they are not too loud or too quiet and they do sound throaty.

Haha, wow I didn't think this thread would be revived. I've since moved on to a dual muffler setup. It's a bit quieter but it seems to breathe more easily.

I don't even know where to start on this one. I look at this topic like a river filled with boats all adrift. :x
