Tint Removal

Tint Removal

Postby mightymouse402 » Mon Jan 05, 2009 5:27 pm

Hello all,

I have been trying to look for the best method for tint removal because the tint on my backseat windows and the back windshield is starting to look like crap. I was wondering if any of you guys have attempted tint removal and are there any good methods or any products out there that I can use to make this process less painful.

Thanks, and all helpful responses are appreciated.

:D

If I'm not mistaken, I believe most tint shops use ammonia with some trash bags to keep the tint moist while it's soaking. Once off, goo-gone should take off the remaining residue. I'd be interested if the walmart stuff works, though.

Use a Steamer.....if the tint is really really bad, then you'll need to do the garbage bag trick as mentioned above.

A steamer is what I see most commonly used.

I've used Tint-off from Walmart before and if you read the package carefully it's mostly for removing the tint adhesive that's still stuck on the window. The tint film itself will have to be peeled off first. I tried to remove the tint on my girlfriend's gen2 Camry and let me just say it was a TOTAL PAIN in the a**. Her tint was purple with a bunch of bubbles everywere. I managed to get the tints on the side windows off by using a heat gun on one side of the window and a steamer on the other side. The rear windshields was complete torture. No matter how much steam or heat I used the damn tint wouldn't come off. I could peel off the top tint layer but most of the adhesive was still there. I ended up scraping it off with a razor blade, which took forever. I also damaged every single defroster lines so the defroster did not work anymore. My GF was pissed off. Then I tried buying all kinds of repair kits to fix the defroster lines but they wouldn't stick on very well. So I had to buy her a new rear windshield. In the next couple of weeks I have to take it to a tint shop to retint it. It's a long story but I learned that it's better just to pay the shop to remove the tint. They have a much better steamer than mine and I don't have to spend 3 days of labor scraping off tints. That's only with really stuck on, purple, bubbly tint. If your tint still looks somewhat good then you might have a better chance than me. Good luck.
