I did check the gear ratios and they are not too bad, which surprises me since the S53 is designed for a 4 cylinder, which usually revs higher than a six and has less torque and it is indeed geared for higher revs, but it isn't too far off from the E153.
yes, the bellhousing is reported to match up just fine.
as for the gear ratios- how would you say that it's geared for higher revs? It's obvious that it's geared for lower torque and powerband with the lower final gear ratio.
as for the shift linkage, I'd listen to gabe....I had never really thought about that, but I had presumed that it was just the shifter design that was really different and moves the linkage in a different way.
see if your guy can find a camry e153 and keep things simple, or even an e53 if need be. if he's an importer, he'll be able to find one, just might take a bit of time.
