New Tires are causing problems

New Tires are causing problems

Postby SirMacDaddy » Sun Dec 02, 2007 7:55 pm

So, i just got new tires put on my gen 2 rims on my gen 1 solara and they are causing more problems than i anticipated.

The tires are 225/50/17, thats what 3 tire places said is the biggest i could go. i have 15mm spacers in the back to keep the tires from rubbing the struts but now i have the problem with tires rubbing the wheel well whenever i hit something kinda fast, like a speed humps or when i have people in the back seat. the tires rub constantly. what should i do? any one have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Thanks
Omar

What about a 10mm spacer? If I recall, isn't the Gen 2 wheel +50? A 15mm spacer seems like overkill.

I dont know how well this works, but it appears to be a nifty gadget:

a bit more expensive than a baseball bat though

I would say 10mm spacers would fix your problem. Judging from how close my wheels are to the fender, I would say 15mm is pushing it. I'm running a 215mm tire with a 5mm spacer on my gen. 2s. I would measure the amount of width between your tire and strut and see if you can decrease your spacer without rubbing the strut.

As said above, you could also roll your fender and keep the 15mm spacer. I haven't done this so I can't recommend it. Good luck.

None at all. I have less than a finger's width in-between the tire and strut, and maybe a finger and a half between the tire and fender. I could probably do a 10mm spacer and still be fine, but I wouldn't go much larger. I have a little more wiggle room than you since I'm running a smaller width tire.

From my research, I know other SG members with gen. 1/1.5s have run 225 width tires on gen. 2 rims with no problems. I would measure your gaps and see if a decreased spacer would work. I doubt you could go any lower than a 10mm spacer b/c my tire is very close to the strut even with my setup.

I'll try to post up some pics tonight. Both of my cameras are out for repair, but I'll figure something out.
