Tranny Swap

ok, my winter project is to swap my automatic transmission with a manual transmission....Please don't comment this just to tell me how stupid it is and what not because i've hurd that enough. I am going to do it no matter what. I just need a few tips. I went to autozone and they said they could get me a manual transmission for $800 and the clutch kit would be about $300. Does that seem reasonable? And what else am i looking at in changing except : new ecu, clutch kit, transmission, cut out a box for the shifter, and a 3rd pedal? Thanks a lot guys

I would add SPEC or ACT clutch stage 2-3 clutch and Fidanza lightweight flywheel for a perfect street setup !

If you can’t buy the setup mentioned above, you might be better off if you find a donor car. This swap could get very expensive with all new parts. If you’re going to do it, go ahead and get good parts for clutch and flywheel. I was able to do pretty well getting a clutch and flywheel for the Celica off eBay on the cheap. I saved about $200 dollars over the cheapest websites w/ the same parts.

^^ along those lines, if a solara 1mz-fe 5 speed was found in a salvage yard, would it be an easier conversion, since most all the parts needed would be OEM? or would it be just as difficult/time consuming/expensive as an aftermarket tranny swap?

^that would be fairly easy as well. Then you could drop in a nice clutch and flywheel at the same time. The easiest thing to do would be find a manual solara in the first place, but that may be easier said than done...

I imagine that there are piles of little BS parts that you would need to get everything perfect when you’re doing this. If you had a donor you would have all the trim, pedals, bolts and so forth. I can’t imagine how much of a pain it would be to hunt all these pieces down. I think that even the gauge cluster would be slightly different, as I imagine that the MT doesn’t need an illuminated D or P on the cluster. I bet the radiator doesn’t need the transmission cooler hookup that the AT has. Allot of stuff you might not need, but getting the thing right is important. With a donor you could just plug and play the OE parts from the old car to the new one. It would be “easy” vs. trying to cobble something together IMHO.

I was doing some research on 6GC and stumbled across this. It made me think of your thread. It’s a brief on doing a transmission swap on a 5th Gen Celica, so it’s actually a much easier swap than an OBD-2 Solara. Still, I think it gives a good window into the complexity and scope of the project you’re considering. Hope this makes for some good reading.

BTW I almost have my 6GC back together! I can’t wait to feel the difference with the lightweight flywheel and new clutch make .

the parts are a bit of a bitch to find, but it's not that bad...the auto gauge cluster can be used without a problem, and all that is really needed is the shifter cables, shifter, brake pedal, clutch pedal, neutral safety switch, and then everything else can be found using car-part.com (tranny, axles) or napa (clutch master cylinder, clutch lines, etc.)

also to note is that there is a mounting plate on the manual tranny that isn't present on the auto tranny, so that will also have to be found along with a manual tranny mount for it all to fit together

on that note....if anybody's looking for tranny swap parts...I've got the important stuff such as the shifter, cables, pedals and mounting plate/tranny mount
