Power gains from exhaust

Power gains from exhaust

Postby widow's son » Wed Mar 26, 2003 11:15 am

I am contemplating upgrading my exhaust system but I have a few questions:
1) Are the power gains from the Apex due to an increase in diameter of exhaust tubes or the muffler?
2) What is the OEM exhaust diameter? (Tried search)
3) How difficult is the Apex install?
4) Does anyone have a "custom" (shop built) exhaust w/mandrel bends?(What size tubing was utilized?)
5) If you have a "custom" exhaust what type of muffler did you use? (Borla, TRD etc.)
Thanks in advance for the help.

The OEM exhaust diameter is 2", the APEXi is 2.25". I will be installing mine within the next few days, I will let you know how it goes.

The apexi piping actually works out to be almost 2.5". Its 62mm. (62/25.4).

Performance gains will be negligible on a stock car. With a supercharger you'll notice pretty impressive gains from the exhaust.

Its going to be very hard to have a shop custom make you a mandrel bent setup. Your best bet is to go with a premade catback system. They have very few bends and yield the best airflow which is the main reason for power gains.

The apexi exhaust is very easy to install. 2 people makes it alot easier. Alot you'll need some WD-40 and a penetrating catalyst that'll help loosen up the rusted bolts ( I used liquid wrench). Jack stands are also a must along with a socket, 15mm i beleive

I actually measured my Apexi, the 62 mm (2.4") you refered to is the outside diameter. The stock setup is about 2.1" OD. The inside diameter of the Apexi is 2.25" (I measured it with calipers)

In most cases yes. For a 4cyl, you will lose HP because you lose backpressure due to the larger exhaust piping which was intended for use on a V6.
