Custom Spring Rates

Custom Spring Rates

Postby chullen1 » Mon Apr 05, 2010 11:39 am

I am getting d2 coilovers soon and want some info on custom spring rates. I have a heavy sound system in the trunk that currently makes the stock shocks and springs sag. The d2 coilovers have 8.7 in the front and5.1 in the rear. I was thinking of getting a heavier rear spring. Any thoughts on how heavy would be great.

12 front, 10 rear :drinking:

6 or 7 kg/mm in the rear would probably be best to counteract the weight without having to change the rate for the fronts.

10kg/mm = 560lb/in.

12kg/mm = 670lb/in. Yeah, that's stiff. (twss)

The out of the box 5.1 that the D2 has, is 285lb/in.
If you went to a 6 it would be 336lb/in.
At 7 you would have 392lb/in.

You'd probably be fine with a 6. How much extra weight do you have in the trunk?

FYI 1kg/mm = 56lb/in. :sweet:

just to chime in,

I have coilovers on both my cars: Camry and S2000

The Camry has the JIC Magic FLTA2-RS
The S2000 has T1R fully adjustables

The S2000 runs much higher rates than the camry @ 10kg and to me it feels soft still since the dampening is so good. I forgot what the rates for the JIC Magics are but IMO you'd want to get at least 8+ in the rear as its a bigger car. Make sure they match the dampers to the springs or it could get bouncy/rough ride real fast.

I have about 50 to 60 extra pounds with the sub box and floor and extra dynamat. I am thinking either 10kg/mm and 8kg/mm or 9kg/mm and 7kg/mm? I will contact gabe and see what he thinks.

I just looked at the JIC Magic's they have two kinds one with a 5kg/mm rear spring and one with a 6kg/mm rear spring. I might go with 9kg/mm and 7kg/mm for the spring rates.

I would call the manufacturer themselves and ask them what they think. They are going to know best since they did the R&D to decide what their standard spring rates for the car would be. And FYI, I read on Zilvia that JIC has gone belly up and is trying to liquidate everything- they might not be a source for custom springs anymore. I don't know for sure, but I heard they have everything in stock on a clearance sale, so I wouldn't doubt it.

K-Sport does custom rate springs though, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I might call them this week. I know D2 racing is still in business. I think 9kg/mm and 7kg/mm will be awesome with the 36way rebound and damping control these coilovers have.

anything higer then like 7 for the camry will be too much and youll start to compromise handling. My buddie's S has much stiffer spring rates but because they are more expensive and designed specifically for the S they dont fee that stiff. even the expensive C/O systems are just reworked to fit the solara/camry chassis. so the dampening is matched to the spring rate...and not the car.

6 should be fine.
