Hi All,

I'm sort of a noob here in terms of modding my car. I've just purchased a Supercharger from trd4life, and I am planning to slap all my mods back in once it's installed.

My current mod list:
INJEN
CAI Extension
OBX Catback Exhaust
(Have a 2.5" high flow cat)

1) On top of that, I was wondering if there's a chance that my setup will pass smog if I buy and install the OBX headers, because some of you boosted guys here seem to have pretty good feedback on those headers. I would like to get more performance, but don't want to worry about taking it off down the road.

2) I'm also worried about the transmission being fried, and trd4life suggested that I can get a transmission cooler, and use Royal Purple transmission oil. I wonder if that's going to be sufficient, or if it is necessary. Have anyone did any other mods like the valve body mod that this website mentioned (http://www.gadgetonline.com/Transmission.htm). I think there's a mod that relates to tightening the transmission wire next to the throttle cable. I wonder if it's a good idea to tighten it more after the supercharger installation. I want to get boosted in first gear, but I don't want to ruin my transmission.

3) If there's any other mod that you might suggest, please let me know.

By the way. I think I will be doing 4psi boost, because some other post mentioned anything equal or above 6psi will require some overhaul.

just put the obx 3in exhaust with headers, then go to your local muffler shop and have them cut out a test pipe, and have them make it big enough to fit the stock cat, have flanges welded on both, then when its time to smog just bolt on the stock cat, find a smog guy who only cares if it passes the smog test, and doesnt care about the visual inspection, and it will pass smog no prob, as for the tranny you wont hurt it with 4psi, just put a good tranny cooler on and it will be fine, and ALWAYS run premium gas, when you choose to run more boost then just post it and we will feed you the info...................... :drinking:

^^x2....If the high flow cat still gives you a CEL, I'd get an 02 simulator. I'm running a straight pipe now, but when I had my high flow catalytic on, it still gave me a code. Just something to keep in mind if you find yourself with a CEL afterwards. Not expensive, like $40 bucks and wires into the ECU.

Thanks. Is the anti-fouler mod the one that offsets the O2 sensor from the exhaust so that it won't see that there's too much smog? I would want one of those if anyone is selling it =]

Seems like you guys' experience was that if you put in a header, with a high flow cat, it won't pass smog. So, would it pass smog if I put in the header, plus the stock cat welded in?

Next thing I'll need to research where is my local smogger that doesn't care about visual inspection =/

if you're going to do headers, i would not recommend putting on the stock catalytic. its just as easy to put some flanges on an aftermarket high flow catalytic as it is a stock one. The aftermarket will still let you pass a visual inspection, so long as they see something that looks like a cat. You could also just gut your stock catalytic and run that....it'll function like a straight pipe, still visually looks like a cat, but you'll have to run a simulator or something because you'll definitely get a CEL.

no you run without a cat, and have a test pipe made and have flanges welded on the stock cat and only bolt it on when you smog, then take it off when done smogging, and put the test pipe back on, so theres no cat on, didnt you read my 1st post i left you at the begining of this thread, high flow cats dont work good on our v6's, they dont create enough heat, so you end up with a cel going off, and if you car isnt to loud dont worry about the cops looking for a cat, there after ricers with those boom cans...................... :drinking:

the anti-foulers you can buy at your local parts store for about $5 brand new. i know, because i just bought a set last week. they're in the HELP section.

i agree you really should get a tranny cooler. i added one to my 95 when i s/c'd it, and i'm sure it helped. i didn't run synthetic, but i did a drain/fill of the tranny every other oil change with regular ATF to keep it super clean.

i don't recommend boost in first though. unless you have wide sticky tires (mine were 215s and i wouldn't call them wide) you will have traction problems in first under boost. i had to train myself to never go full throttle in first, and to lift between shifts, which i found annoying. then again, i had a gen3 camry, and the EBC wasn't compatible with its ECU so i had it hooked up as if it was stickshift. on a gen4/solara, the EBC will help protect the transmission during shifts. not worth the hassle, imho. trd knew what they were doing when they disabled boost in first for automatics.

i kinda wish it was disabled in my 5spd 98 camry as well... if i hit even a hint of boost in 1st gear, i'm spinning the tires.

i boost in first with my auto. you just have to feather the gas on leaving the line so you don't spin the tires. manual shift from first to second without lifting off the gas. if you let the auto do the shifting while boosted it will screw up the auto. second to third is ok to shift with the auto but i like doing my own shifting. trd4life let me in on this info. he runs autos with boosting and with nitrous . :drinking: i'm also running a cooler.

when shifting from first to second at wide open, shift at 5000 to 5200 rpm. it takes approx. 1000 rpm after moving the shifter for the tranny to shift into gear. i run my car on track manually shifting all the gears. i have a peice of tape on my tack set at 5200 to help me shift at the right times to stay off the rev limiter. :D

Yeah, I do want boost on 1st gear. I do want to be quick off the line, you know. And I also still want the boost cut during shifts to be protective of my transmission.

Seems like a transmission cooler is a must.
