170 deg Thermostat Question

Does anybody out there run a 170 degree thermostat?

If so, are you NA or S/C'ed and have you noticed any performance increase?

Fletch, have you tried a cooler thermostat to see if it increases power? I really notice a big increase in power when it gets cold outside.

I have one but I notice nothing, but I think ragtop is right that it will run alittle bit better with the colder weather but i havent had to experience that yet so well see.

What are the pro's and con's to running low temp thermostats?
Pro's
1. cooler engine
2. engine life since cooler engine

con's (i'm assuming)
1. decreased radiatorfan life
2. decreased waterpump life
3. more frequent radiator flushes...(but thats a good thing).

I'm sure there are more...can someone add to mine.....

I heard that Stant makes a 170 deg thermo that somebody with a S/C'ed Solara installed. I guess one con is the cooling system will work a little more to bring the engine down to temp but I haven't heard of many bad Toyota rads or water pumps so it's probably not a big issue. I also heard aftermarket thermo's do not have the quality of the OEM's.

S/C'ed 1mz-fe need help in hot weather, at least mine really suffers, it's great in cooler air even with only 3.2 in pulley.
