Coilover Maintenance/Repair

Lately, my coilover are getting worn (bouncy) and is due for some serious repair. I have the JIC FLT-A1 setup and one of the dampers is leaking bad.

I checked the prices on the dampers and are around $320 each.

Have anyone tried replacing theirs? How hard is it to DIY? I am actually planning on replacing all 4 but at that price why not just buy new ones... oh the dilemma.

You should be able to send it to JIC to get them rebuilt??

Jic's A1 system aren't rebuildable. Only replacement dampers. Also I was quoted $260 each damper minus tax and shipping. It's fairly easy to replace the dampers, just more involved because there's more parts to loosen and remove. Most of all you need to unload the springs by lowering the perch and all the rest is just disassembly.

JIC has the dampeners, you might be able to also upgrade to the inverted monotube design ;) like in the FLT-TAR.

Had Teins in the ride once, pretty good, sent the fronts for a rebuild, took 2 months to get them back <- i was not happy at all...

Got the FLT-TAR now.... might go for helper springs, I keep hearing some rattling, checked everything, and its tightened... might be worn bushings..

gonna take a look in a few to see wassup.

but yeah, the shock replacement isnt too complex in JIC, literally take them apart, and reverse the procedure. look @ your springs too while youre at it, might wanna upgrade them if the bounce is too much for you... probably 2-4 lbs per mm higher?

How long did you guys had your coilovers , before having them rebuild ...do they last longer than a spring / shock setup ?

I hit a giant crater in the road last weekend and now have a blown left front JIC coilover. i am in the process of talking with them through email about the rebuild process and trying to decide what to do. I need the car for a show next month and am concerned they wont get back to me in time.

They told me that if they cannot be fixed, the prices for replacements would be: "TAR cost is $1340- FAS cost $1120" BUT for that pricing you must return your old coils to JIC. Im going to send mine in when I can and see what the cost to fix/clean/refurbish them in their current state is, then decide if I will pay that cost or just get a new set with the discount. In the mean time, I will most likely purchase k-sports or D2 coilovers to use on my car for the few weeks that my coils will be at JIC, then sell them after they make it home to me. ill keep you guys updated on the process and the costs.

Dude, why dont you buy the shock for the JIC's?

I have my tein coilover setup in my garage, collecting dust... too bouncy for me, too soft...

I was considering selling them, but why not keep an extra suspension setup around, just in case ;)

^ if you want to rent them to me for a couple of weeks, that would be awesome- let me know, haha.

I am planning to send them in to JIC- I dont know for certain what is broken, so i want the techs to have a look at them. I also so not know for sure that the dampers are available still for my coils or if they are discontinued- JIC is going to check for me when i get them detailed pictures of my coils tonight.

I've had mine for about 4 year with close to 100,000 miles on it. If it weren't for that pot hole I drove through it would have still been fine.
