Dynoed the Camry yesteday
So a local shop had a dyno day. 60 bucks for 3 pulls so figured why the hell not. Well, I kind of gret it now. First off, I'm not familiar with the dyno type they used. It wasnt dyno jet and it wasnt mustang, but when I asked one guy at the shop how it compared to dynojet as far as reading high or low all he could say was "it reads whats actually at the wheels." So that wasnt useful. However, there was a 2000 s2k there with intake, header, and exhaust that dynoed at 219 if that gives you any comparison.
So I figured Id make maybe 170 or 175 at the wheels. In case you're not familiar with my ride, its a 99 camry 1mz 5 speed, cai, tb spacer, intake wrap, jp y pipe with high flow cat. Only one clean run was done and it netted 162 whp and about 185 ft lbs of torque. The shop had to email us the graphs so I'm still waiting on mine. The torque curve did look good but the hp was dissapointing. My car pulls strong and I've raced and beaten quite a few vehicles that led me to think I was making more than waht was dynoed. Laugh if you want, but they didnt have a fan in front of the vehicle and I wonder if that would have simulated actualy road conditions (drawing in air rushing at the car) then maybe it would have been a lil better.
Now for why I only got one freaking clean pull in. They stapped the car down and at the end of the first run the strap on the front pass. side moved slightly, enough that the car hopped off and my heart seriously skipped a beat as I thought for sure it was gonna fly off into a wall. Well, instead the car stayed put but the front pass. tire came off the roller directly so it wasnt spinning but the roller was still close enough to rub the tire. Well this ensued a massive cloud of smoke and tire squeal. The smoke lingered for severeal minutes and the people at the shop tried to just play it off and laugh about it saying everything was ok. I saw a shitload of rubber peel off when it hit. I looked at the tire and it seemed ok, but when they strapped it down again and did another run you could hear it was flat spotted.
The guy dynoing stopped before he could get a clean run in and I addressed my concern with the tire. He said it was just rubber on the roller and that it wasnt burning off and the noise was going away. I knew he was full of crap and I looked at the tire again and this time I could see a section of tread missing. I mean, like something took a bite out of it. It was just belts. I showed the guy and he proceeded to unhooked his equipment and back the car out.
Now this shop is run by a tire chain in the area so they had tires and they said they'd sell me one and my dyno fee would go towards it and then I'd only have to pay the difference. While this is all happpening mind you I'm trying to keep my cool and not blow up. One sales guy says that its a risk when dynoing and I waived that right even though I didnt sign crap. Well he said what did I feel was fair and I said two tires since Id be putting one on that wouldnt match, both tread pattern wise and depth wise. They argued that my tires were needing replacement soon anyway (they had one more summer left). They were trying to sell me four freaking tires. Can't believe they wanted to scam me like that. I was pretty much at their mercy though and just said I'd get one. I ended up getting a Kuhmo (dont remember the model name) and they ended up just having me pay the dyno fee and the tire was free. I still feel they should have done more but I just wanted to get the screw out of their. One doadus that was putting the tire on started to remove my front driver side wheel and I told him it was the other side. He looked at me annoyed but at least listened. Then I requested that he torque the lug nuts by hand and he seemed annoyed by that too. Amazes me how people out there want to do hack work and get annoyed when you want things done right.
So anyway, I got the tire put on, and was annoyed since I didnt plan to buy tires till witner since I was going to go with larger wheels/tires for summer anyway. I went to a friend's house afterwards and looked up the Kumho I bought. It was a decent tire afterall so I'll be buying another one tomorrow to match up the front. But all in all my dyno experience was a souring one.
