any really good gas saver ideas?

I read an article in some magazine several years ago that found the best mileage (with a stick shift) was to accelerate with a fairly heavy foot, but to short shift. (ie: let off the gas and shift lower in the RPM range than you would for a given throttle setting)

They explained it like this: piston engines are more efficient the wider the throttle is, and by accelerating vigorously to cruising speed, you can then close the throttle to granny position quicker.

I looked (briefly) on Dr. Google for the article, but came up with this instead:

one of the letters talks about this method.

I consistently get 29/30 mpg on regular with my stock 02 4cyl manual. I like my girl the way she is. I replace my stock air filters every 20k miles, oil every 5 k, and drive as gently as possible.

When I was living in Cali and dealing with traffic I got about 25/26 mpg
