Welcome. Modding can be a long term goal. I think your priority should be that clunk and other maintenance stuff first. Things to check:

Worn strut mount
Worn strut
Sway bar links
Tie rod ends

What makes your mechanic think the water pump needs to be changed?

Its common with the 1mz/3mz. It involves the same work to change the timing belt
