Hello! New Gen1 guy here

Hello!

I found this site browsing Toyota Nation and figured I'd say hi here as well. I’ve already been reading about these cars on here and so far I am very happy that there are little to no problems with them :D.

I'll cut my car/automotive background short, but basically I was looking for a reliable car with nice creature comforts and similar gas mileage as my 98 GTI-2.0 that I am currently driving. I’m not new to the car scene or to the forum life either so no worries about newb stuff from me (except maybe a few dumb car specific questions here and there). I’ll probably just be lurking around most of the time as I’m not nearly as active online as I used to be.
A bit of advice about my other car that I'm replacing: Don't daily drive your SCCA rallycross car  It can be done, but it’s becoming a very big chore to keep it going at 176k. I’ll be taking it off the road as soon as the Solara is deemed road worthy by the DMV (hopefully later today!).

previous cars before that:
27k mile 1991 Eagle Talon TSI AWD, 14b, 240whp/260wtq
Image

1.8T powered 1996 Jetta GL, k03s ~20-24psi, 200whp/240wtq
Image

…Anyways, I just bought a 2001 SE-V6 5 speed with 46xxx miles on it for blue book value. This car definitely fits the bill as it's loaded with all the features in a car that I could ever dream of. Because of the low mileage, I'll be keeping this car for a VERY long time (until it dies), but until I pay it off, it will remain stock. The only real plans I have for it down the line are cosmetic stuff as I don't really want to touch the engine/drivetrain on this car.

on with pictures: (from dealer)

A few questions that I had though:

I saw on the wikipedia page that there was a sport package offered for the SE models:
“The Sports Package also adds a retuned suspension, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, perforated 8-way power-adjustable leather seats, an upgrade to 16-inch alloy rims, retuned steering, minor trim changes and a rear lip spoiler.”
What do these alloys look like? My car has most of these features (I think) minus the leather seats (has power cloth and manual pass seat), which leaves me to believe that I don't have this package :( Can anybody confirm this for me?

And not regarding the sport model:
1. What are the wheel specs on the wheels I have on now? (for reference later on) They’re 16” wheels
2. Do I need to run 89+ octane?
3. What is the Timing belt change interval?
4. What’s a good repair manual for this car?

TIA!!!!

welcome...i think most of the guys are using Haynes manuals. 89 octane is fine for right now unless you want to go SC down the road. as for the other questions, i'm sure the other guys will chim in

haynes manual for camry/solara

OEM wheel specs should be located inside the driver door jamb

octane is debated back and forth...you can get away with 89oct, but a lot of us use 91+. really, it's kinda up to you, as our compression is pretty near atmosphereic, and knock/ping issues aren't too common with lower octane fuel on our cars.

performance differences are negligable, possibly getting better milage with the higher octane stuff.

timing belt and water pump at 90k like jet said

you can leave the drivetrain as is and be content with it, but it seems that most people like upgrading the rear sway bar (esp if you're into autox/rally, and are used to the handling), wheel and suspension, even if they don't want to touch the drivetrain. stock our cars handle like FWD boats.

welcome to sg

ps, the wheels on that solara are the 16" TRD alloys, if i'm not mistaken...the factory upgraded ones....

i had different wheels on my SLE when i bought it, but i got it through a private seller, so they might have been changed out anyway....but i'm pretty sure those are the factory 16" TRDs

Welcome!

You have the sport package. My car has the same options minus the 5 speed (dammit) the wheels you have ARE NOT TRD wheels, they are the factory sport wheels most of us have them, or had them. TRD used 17 inch TSW Revo wheels for the TRD package. Anyway, enjoy the car and the forum.
Trust me, I'm a technician.
