Need a little help diagnosing CEL and poor running engine

Postby MetrowestLara » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:04 am

I have a 99 SLE V6 Solara that currently has the CEL on. I took the car to Autozone and had them read the code. The code came back as p0701 which indicates Bank 1 too lean. I also noticed now that the car seems to be running exteremly rough. Almost as though it's misfiring.

I had had a similar situation previosuly and CEL codes confirmed I was getting misfires. At that time I replaced an O2 sensor (near firewall), replaced ignittion wires, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs. Essentially a tune up. That cleared the CEL for a couple of weeks and then the light came back on. Although I did not pick up any misfire codes. I had also cleaned my MAF sensor.

My question is should I replace the MAF sensor and front O2 sensor or just the O2 sensor? It is a California emmissions car so I know I need the higher priced part. I'd rather not replace things I don't have to but neeed a clean running car. My state inspection is coming up in Nov. and it won't pass with a CEL light on. Seems lately that I fix one thing only to have somehting else come up.

Thanks.

If the code says you're running lean I'd try changing your fuel filter and making sure your fuel pump is working properly. Although, if it is just one bank it probably isn't a global problem like the pump/filter. Clogged / malfunctioning injector perhaps?

Haynes manuals have a section with all of the OBD-II (CEL) codes and steps to troubleshoot / fix them. If you're going to do your own work I highly recommend some form of reference.

This may sound weird, but try getting some CRC MAF cleaner and clean ur maf with it, reset the CEL and see if it comes back...it most likely wont come back ;)

I did change the fuel filter when I first got the code so I don't think that is the issue. I will try cleaning the MAF sensor again. I did clean it the first time when I changes the wires, plugs, etc. If anyone else has an idea or gotten this code feel free to suggest possible fixes.
