Torque ?

Torque ?

Postby shaggy » Mon Sep 26, 2005 8:10 pm

Example car (A) 1.8 has 130 hp, 125 lb.-ft. Car (B) 1.8 170 hp, 127 lb.-ft. Car (C) 2.4 has 157 hp, 162 lb.-ft. Which car would be faster? What does it mean when the torque is higher than hp? Would car (B) beat car(C) why.

Hp is work divided by time.
Work is like force divided by distance or some hogwash

what really matters is Hp and vehicle weight.

but if weight is constant, your car (B) will pull on car (C), but car (C) will have the advantage off the dig

(are those like civic ex, integra gsr, and 5sfe numbers?)

I always seen it like this... Hp is how hard a car can pull, while Torque is how fast it will help the car pull.. So more tq or more hp wouldnt define which car will win, but how its used on the weight of the car....

The answer is D, none of the above.

Hp to weight ratio rules the who's faster answer most of the time in most instances. Hp is a measure of top end, while torque is the power that moves mass. A good example is a small turbo with lots of boost like an Audi or Saab. I had a 2.3 turbo that made 258lbs of tq @1850 rpms and 200hp @ around 5000rpms. So at 50 mph in 5th gear I had all my torque without needing to shift. Now take a S2000 with 240hp at a stratospheric rpm but only has around 160lbs of tq at also a very high number. Load two heavy folks in that car at 60mph in fifth gear and race that same Saab I just mentioned already at speed. . . .who wins. Well empty out those two cars with just the driver and race from a standstill through the 1/4 mile and the S2000 shows taillights every time, of course it is lighter too but you get the point.
torque moves mass
horse power is a top end indicator

My 2 cents

torque is a measure of the car's power to the ground or asphalt, horsepower is a figurative measure, almost imaginary you need torque to calculate horsepower....either way you really need to check out this site:

http://www.vettenet.org/torquehp.html

that should explain everything
