Hello all! I just bought my first Solara, and indeed my first Toyota a week ago. I bought the 2004 Solara SLE V6 Convertible in white pearl and I am loving it immensely! I only have around 700 miles on it thus far but am looking forward to taking it on a road trip on Labor Day weekend. Before this, I owned nothing but (still own the '94) Honda Accords, but when I went to test drive the 2004 Accords, I just genuinely disliked them. I test drove the Acura RSX, the Infiniti G35, and the Audi A4 to name a few, but fell completely in love with the Solara. It's been a wonderful drive so far, and I look forward to doing some work on it in the next few months. Anyway, just stopping in to do the intro thing.

Passing up this

Welcome

Postby michaels artic frost » Tue Aug 31, 2004 7:39 am

Welcome to the forum. I think one of the reasons for passing the G35 coupe is the fact that there's more back seat room and trunk space in the Gen 2 Solara. Well, atleast that was the case for me.

But G35 coupes are very nice IMO.

Any plans future plans for mods or upgrades?

Enjoy your Labor Day trip. I'm thinking about it but not sure where to go at the moment.

Best regards,
Michael

My reasons for passing up the G35 even though I was in love with the looks and ride was the very tiny trunk, small rear seat, less comfortable front seating position, $9K more expensive for same options, need to get another set of tires for winter, higher maintenance costs (tires and brakes wear out much quicker), and higher insurance costs.

Basically the G35 is in a different class than the Gen2 and you have to be willing to be spending alot more upfront and in maintenance costs. So to pass up a G35 for a Gen2 makes a whole lot of sense if money is an object.

Yeah, but Infinity is one the best reliable cars out in the market right now! You get way more horsepower, better looking, better performance... yeah you can't even compare. 9K is well worth the price to pay for what you are getting over a Gen 2.

As a second car, the G35 is great. But it would have been my only car and that trunk is basically useless to carry anything at all. The Solara's seating position overall to me was much more comfortable and interior quite more roomy. The G35 has very messed up "driving on the left side of the road" controls that Infiniti was too cheap to change when bringing the car to America. I found the controls annoying. I found the Solara interior actually nicer also. I had no room for keeping a separate set of winter tires that I would have needed. If I lived in a snowless area, the G35 would be more tempting for sure. The costs of owning the G35 add up quickly also since the very expensive tires on the G35 wear out very quickly. Basically, if you want a G35, you have to be prepared to spend quite a bit more on parts replacements and service over time than a Toyota. Everyone has their own sense of value and I would never criticize someone's choice of cars.

P.S. As far as getting a whole lot more horsepower, if you compare the G35 auto with the Solara auto, the difference in 0-60 is only about .6 second. The Gen2 Solara is no slouch.

Thanks Rene...I've been wondering about that myself....maybe this forum should be called solaraguywisheshedroveag35.com instead, LOL...that is a joke.

The G35 is a different car that appeals to a different market than the Solara - regardless of generation. Before you talk about how great Infinity reliablity is you might want to look at the figures for the G35...it is built on the 350z platform and the 350z looks more like a Kia when compared to the Gen 2 in terms of reliability. I know 2 people here in Atlanta that had their G35 taken back under the lemon law.
