Howdy from Texas

Postby linmk2 » Tue Dec 12, 2006 7:25 pm

From one Texan to another, howdy! I owned, for slightly more than a year, a 2006 convertible. To date, not a single problem. I've own many cars over the years, but I've never owned a new car that did not need some sort of repair in the first 12 months of ownership. The Toyota is the first. I hope you find just want you are looking for. Good luck.

Not much of a town really, pretty much a dump. I've live here all my life and it used to be a nice place to live. I stay because I have a good job and a nice home that I could not afford to replace elsewhere.

Its pretty neat down there when I use to chill down there allot... Cant beat the seafood fresh from the boat.. Scariest thing is driving at night on that long empty haunted highway and all you see are the oil refinery factory in the distance....

There is one thing about the area. You will not go hungry. You are right, the seafood is great. Many good places to eat in Port Arthur and Beaumont (not too bad of a place). Port Arthur has an interesting history. Founded during the oil boom at the turn of the 20th century. Port Arthur was the place to come to work in the oil refineries. Very, very good money for not much education. The city boomed. Texaco was founded here, as well as the Guffy Oil Company (Gulf Oil). The Texaco plant located in Port Arthur was their largest North American Plant. The Gulf Plant here, was their largest, period. The schools were the finest in the state. However, during the 70's and 80's the city lost it's shine. The great paying job ended when the plants downsized. More the 7000 people lost their jobs in one year. Everyone left. The schools stated to fall apart (one built in 1918 is still being used). The poor stayed behind. The city faltered. Just now, things are starting to improve. New developments are popping up everywhere. New business is coming in. The schools still suck! Thats why the property values are so low. You can buy a really great house for $1000s less than most other places in Texas. A new refinery is going to be built next year. When completed in 2012, it will be the largest refinery in the US. Will the 7000 job be replaced? Sadly, no. Most everything will be computer operated. It's estimated that only 300 new jobs will be created. However, 3000-5000 construction jobs will be coming to the area.
