Hello everyone,

I've been on the forums for a while as a guest and decided to finally register myself.

I discovered this forum after receiving a recommendation from a member of Corolland.com, where I was a member for a year before I was made a moderator by the administrator. I still serve as a moderator on that forum.

I'm in my final semester of college and as of December 19th, I'll have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

For a 23 year old college student, a 2008 Solara SE coupe is a pretty nice car and I am generally happy with it. It brakes and handles a lot better than the 2005 Camry LE I drove for the semester immediately proceeding my purchase of the Solara and it is a ton better in the looks department. I like all the features it has and I consider it very well equipped for a base model car, much better equipped than say a base Camry sedan. To be really honest, it is better equipped than my previous car, a 2005 Corolla LE sedan which I custom ordered so that I could have every option.

I take good care of the car because taking good care of my things is in my nature. It gets regularly washed and waxed and the maintenance is taken care of by my local Toyota dealer.

So far Ive managed to put about 6 thousand miles on it and I have to say that I've enjoyed every one of them. All my friends love the car.

The only thing I've done to it so far is to add Sirius. For anyone who wonders, any 2008 fit kit is compatible with the 2008 Solara (I have the one from the FJ Cruiser) and the tuner is the same for all Toyotas. As long as your car has the satellite radio button, Sirius can be added. I ordered everything from 1sttoyotaparts.com, the preferred vendor over at corolland. I'm pretty mechanically and electronically inclined so I was able to install it myself without instructions in less than an hour. It works like a charm and having steering wheel controls instead of a wireless remote like I had with my previous tuner is a real plus.

I really am looking forward to being a member of this community, you all seem so helpful.

Cheers,

I've had the car since December '07 and I think that there are '08 owners here that have had their cars since July '07 but there aren't very many of us '08 owners on here.

I'm kind of disappointed that they are discontinuing the car. My lease will be up in 2010 and by that time they will no longer be building any Solara, so my thoughts of replacing the coupe with a convertible after I get a good engineering job were for naught. I guess I'll have to go over to the dark side and buy a Mazda Miata to get my convertible fix.

Mazdas really aren't bad, I also had a 2004 Mazda 3s while I was leasing the Corolla and it was a blast to drive.

Hold on, wait a minute? You graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree AND you're mechanically inclined? You must be one of those weirdos that actually went to class and stuff and took tests and stuff. :) Welcome!

I've always been mechanically inclined, but yes, I do go to class and I do all my homework and I do study for exams on occasion. ME isn't one of those, "the Weekend starts on Wednesday" majors. If you want to graduate with a 2.7 you have to be prepared to work your butt off, even on weekends.

I'm still in school at the moment, I'll have my degree in December if everything goes as planned. Then providing the economy doesn't tank, I'll be looking for an engineering job to replace my foray into the retail world that is my current job.

Welcome fellow Bs ME student. Couldn't agree more on the study thing, only that my studying is constant and not just 'occasional'.
The site has a wealth of resources that you will find indispensable.

Yeah, I was kidding about the occasional studying. My life has consisted of studying, going to class, working, eating, and sleeping in that order for the past four years. I am pulling a 3.0 right now, which is a high GPA for our ME program, most graduate with a 2.5-2.7.

I have known that engineering was what I wanted to do since I was a kid and I am willing to do pretty much anything to do well, failure just isn't acceptable in my life.

Thanks to everyone for the welcome.
