Hi, I Just purchased a 2001 Solara 6 cylinder SE with 18000 miles for 13,500. I checked the mileage thru Carfax and am confident that it is original. (NY State keeps fairly good records of yearly inspections and the previous owner drove about 4000 miles a year) The body is perfect (silver) and it seems as if it was probably hand washed and garaged. It was Toyota certified which means that Toyota guarantees the engine and drive train for 2 more years. I got an extended warrantee on most other components for 800.00, which is refundable at the end of 2 years if I don’t use it. If I have a 2.00 component replaced I lose my ability to get a refund of my 800.00, so that means that I have to stay away from Toyota unless I have real disaster. (They originally tried to sell this “Gold extended care” program for 1400.00 with no refund provision, so if you get in this situation, hold off and bargain) First off I love this car but I have a few questions that I would like to ask you, as it seems there is a hell of a lot of knowledge about these cars out there. First thing is gas mileage. I’m getting about 16-17 a gallon mostly city driving but not heavy footed. Is this about right? Also this car seems very soft and bouncy from what I’m used to. I’ve been driving a 94 Acura Integra with a tight suspension, so I’m not sure. I had my mechanic take it for a quick test drive and he told me instead of changing the struts the money would be better spent on a physiatrist , that it rides ok. I hear a kind off drum sound on bumps coming from the suspension and figured that struts would probably go over time regardless of mileage as well as other components (like tires). Also another thing that I was wondering is that there is no map light, just the cup for a garage door remote. I noticed that in the owners Manuel that you can get this car with a map light. Do you think I could get one that would just replace what’s there ? If so does anyone know where this could be purchased? I’m sorry I can’t post a pic as of yet but any input on these questions would be appreciated Thanks NYCSolara

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new purchase, that's very low mileage for a 2001. I'm sure the car still drive like it's pratically brand new.

Enjoy the forum and nice intro.

Welcome.
The curtosy dome lights are adjescent to the sunroof swith components. As your question goes, i'm guessing your solara doesn't have a sunroof, hence no dome lights! FYI: The garage door opener can be swapper out for a sunglass holder. As far as the suspension goes, if its too boat like for you then mod it..and WTF is a "physiatrist"???

Psychiatrist, one of those people that tell you how screwed up your life is than give you a drug habit. Thanks for the info on the lights, I don't have a sunroof, so therefore it just has a dome light in the center of the headliner.

And I thought my "Hi there" was long. So your mech. thought you were crazy? The SE does not have the sport suspension. You'll get the best "stiffening" for your buck with an RSB, then springs/shocks. Check out the G1 boards for results of the various TRD packages. But above all... remember that many Solara owners have short attention spans and good eyes for typos. But it's all in fun. Welcome.

I'm a proud owner of a red '99 SLE V6....I love her. I just put my profile together on cardomain and I'm itching to do stuff to my baby already. I just did some minor stuff to it within the past couple of weeks. I put on a sunroof wind deflector and put on LED washer fluid nozzles. I would like to do a lot more with her without takin away from the style she already has.
