Hello,I joined the site a couple of days ago because I am thinking about buying either a 99 SE,or a 99-00 SLE very soon. I have priced a few and test driven a few,and from what I can see they are very well built, quiet, stylish, and comfortable. (And this is coming from a former Lexus LS400 owner) I have wanted a coupe for some time now and the only one I seem to like in every way is the solara, but before I buy one I have a few concerns and I hope you guys/girls can help me out.
I have been reading alot of the posts here and I have learned alot in 2-3 days, and the more I read on here pushes me closer to buying a solara. I just wanted know from anybody that has a solara with 100,000 plus miles how do these vehicles hold up? Do you have to do anything extra as far as keeping them running in tip top shape? Is there a common problem with the transmissions? I have heard a few stories of friends of friends saying how there trannys just went out on them,is that common in solaras or did they just get a bad one?

Thanks in advance for all of the help.

P.S. I will post pics as soon as I make my purchase

I can't speak from personal experience, but I aill assume from every other Toyota I've owned or seen that the reliability won't be an issue. I've got a 1991 V6 LE Camry with over 150,000 miles on it and a 1992 Toyota Pickup with 320,000 on it back home, and they're both running smoothly (the pickup has the original rear brakes, which are in good condition!).

As for the transmission? My Camry back home (my second Camry, the first one got totaled) has some issues with its transmission starting around 115,000 miles; however, it was purchased used and the little old lady who drove it never left the city she bought it in. You're going for a used one, so it will depend on the previous owner(s). Have you considered a manual SE V6? They're fun... :)

Regardless, good luck - I had to hunt for mine, so best of luck - and have fun... and welcome to the SolarraGuy family.

Welcome to the forums 8)

I have a 2000 SE, V6, 5spd manual transmission. Although I bought it used an have only had it for a few months, I'm enjoying it.

I would recommend getting a Car Fax report whichever car you choose. They cost $14.99 and can give you a lot of good information.

As far as maintenance goes... Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans...they run forever ;) Get regular oil changes every 3500 miles and follow the owners manual about scheduled maintenance.

Let us know how you make out and which Solara you purchase!

welcome.
Like others have stated and others will state, the 1mzfe engine is one solid tite mofo! Just as long as you upkeep the maintenance (oil changes, tranny flushes, sparks, etc) camry solaras could easily see 200K on them.

I got my solara today!

Postby nj99solara » Sat Dec 18, 2004 7:10 pm

Hello again everybody, I just wanted to let you all know that I picked up my 99 Solara SLE V6 today. It's black with tan leather, keyless entry, moonroof, the homelink garage remote control, it has 66,000 miles (which is below the average for 1999), the previous owner took very good care of the paint(just a couple minor scratches)and the leather interior. I also got a carfax report before I purchased it and I test drove it four times in the past month (the dealer thought I was just bored and came to bother him again). They were asking $9,000 and he would not come down any lower than $8,500 so that's what we agreed to. Does anyone think I over paid? I checked kbb.com and they say it should be a little over $12,000. I searched all over my area for the last 5 or 6 months within a 30-50 mile radius and I only found 4 of them and all of them had problems and things I did not like about them so I chose this one, I believe I mad the right choice and so far I love it.
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your replies and technical help, since I joined this site I have learned alot of good things about the solaras and a couple of tricks too. I will post pics as soon as possible.

:D 8) :)
