Need help planning JBL H/U & speaker replacement
I own a 2001 Solara SLE v6 Coupe, and I'm planning on replacing the JBL H/U with something a bit newer, and with more features. I have a few questions, and would appreciate some guidance from the Solaraguy community.
I'm pretty clear on the steps involved in removing the existing radio, and I'm going with a double din model for my new head unit, so I wont need a conversion. My confusion arises when it comes to connecting the new H/U to the existing speakers in my car. I know that it's not recommended to use the existing JBL amp with an aftermarket H/U, and so I was wondering if it was possible to either replace the JBL amp with an aftermarket amp or simply bypass the amp and run my stock speakers directly off of the 50w outs on the new H/U. In either case, I need to know where the JBL amp is located.
Now, on to my next issue. I think I also have a blown speaker in the back, but I'm not sure if it's a blown speaker or a blown sub. Does the Coupe have a sub? If so, where is it and how do I gain access to it. If I don't have a sub, or I have a blown rear tweeter not a blown sub, I'd also like a little guidance on how to remove the rear speakers. Also, what size are the rear speakers, I know the front ones are 6 3/4'' Finally, I am planning on replacing the front speakers, eventually, and just wondering how to gain access to the speaker compartment in the door. I know that, ideally, I should just replace the H/U, amp, and speakers simultaneously, and I may end up doing that, but I would prefer to do the audio upgrades in stages. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
