Struts for the trunk?

Hey Guys,

Has anyone here ever thought of or gone through with removing the factory
torsion rods in the trunk and installing struts? I think that the noisiest part of
the rattles and buzzes in my car is the torsion rods. They resonate like
crazy at about 50-60hz I think. So I'm thinking I could chop them off and
bolt on some hood struts to raise and hold the trunk lid in their place. That
way nothing has to be attached to the rear deck. I'm just wondering if
anyone else has done it, and what you guys think.

Thanks,

Ben, 99BlackSandv6

does the gen 2 use torsion rods too? are they adjustable? when I pop my trunk it only raises about 1/4". I have to pry my fingers in under the trunk lip to raise it. Every other car I've had with a remote trunk release would pop the trunk fully open....is this normal for a gen 2?

Larry, I know that the Gen 1 has adjustability. You can look
under the rear deck to see the rods, and you'll have to remove
panels to get to the ends of the bars. They have several holes
to choose from to adjust preload on the bars. Give it a try.

Anyone have any input on the strut idea?

If this is possible to do I would love to do it to my Camry as well. I am having similar resonance issues with them except it's a bit lower at around 48hz~. I'm temped to try and find some trunk struts from another car and mod them...

Yeah, I'm sure it's doable. I might do it next time I have a free week. I was guessing at the freq. I thought it was about 50hz.
I'm gonna keep on this until I figure stuff out, I've wanted to do this for a long time. I have tried to silence the rods but haven't been able to do it totally. I have stuffed felt between the rods and the center clip, and covered them in vacuum tubing, but it isn't enough.

I might be able to do this soon, I just measured some stuff and I'm looking at eBay. We'll see.
