I forgot exactly what the thing is called, but its somthing llike a line-converter. It is a little box that allows you to splice into the signal received by the rear speakers and send it to your amp. It does not give as good of sound quality as compared to a deck with sub pre-outs, but it will do if you do not want to switch out the OEM head unit.

Yea it's called a line out converter. I use one and it's a total PITA. The sound quality is definately not as good as a new head with pre outs, and it takes a lot more tweaking to get it to sound good, but it does work.

A new head unit is definitely preferred, but as an additional option - many amplifiers, (particularly subwoofer amplifiers), offer a speaker-level input in addition to the pre-amp level inputs. If the amplifier you choose has that available, you don't need a line out converter, as the amplifier is already doing the signal level conversion for you.

just need to add a voltage convertor that converts your speaker wire to RCA signal. i had that set up before, but it is not as good as an aftermraket headunit

Some ppl just rather not have an aftermarket HU so to keep theives away from smashing out ur windows
tell me what thief would want to bother with a stock HU?

Although you lose the quality of sound, but keeps sticky fingers away
vice versa, you have a nice HU, but run the risk of it gettin jacked

Supplies:
Line out conveter (40-50 bucks at Circuit City)
RCA audio wires
Some T wire adapters.

-Leeche the rear R and L line from ur stock deck to the converter with the T adapters.
-Attach the RCA wires to the Conveter and attach the other end to the Line in on ur Amp.

The sound quality isn't as great as a deck with a subwoofer output, but you will get bass.

i had that set up before i got a new deck. I recomend a new deck

what kind of amp and sub are you getting and what wattage output?

I tapped in to the signal coming out of the HU before the JBL amp. No need for a converter, and I just run a regular pair of RCAs to the sub amp...if I ever upgrade to a better HU, I won't need to run RCA cable to the sub...just pop in a new HU...and bypass the JBL amp.

I would NOT use a line out converter, the stock amp adds heavy loudness gain, your system will be too boomy at lower volume levels. If you take the line signal from before the JBL amp (if you have a JBL setup) you'll get very clean, line level signal without any loudness compensation. The loudness is handled by the amp, the stock JBL HU actually has a fairly clean signal....

Uhmmm.... sure if you wanna do that.
but i just found it easier to tap the rear speaker wire from the HU and used the converter to convert it to the RCA wires and connect the RCA to the amp.

This was recomended by stereo shops and on many othe forums.

But hey, if it works, it works.

You need this: Navone N-85V.

http://www.davidnavone.com/adaptor_products.htm

Make sure you get the one with the "v"...you can adjust the level of noise. I just bought it last week to connect with my 00 Lara. I haven't installed it properly yet (hence my latest thread)

But it apparently works flawlessly and you can adjust the loudness levels — includes dial that the non-v 85 offers.

It's under $30 and they shipped it to me in less then 5 days — incredibly fast!
