Try to ground close to the amplifier if possible. Make sure you ground to a completely bare metal surface (meaning scrape the paint off of the small area where the ground will be in contact, go over it with a brillo pad and wipe off thoroughly to make sure there's no paint or dust on the grounding site). Use a copper ring terminal crimped onto the grounding cable for the best connection and screw it flush onto the bare metal grounding site.

In addition to what prodigy79 said, you might want to paint the area where you scrapped off the paint to avoid any problems with rust.
You might also want to bolt it down as opposed to using a selt-tapping screw.

I have mine grounded to the floor, right between the back seat and the sub box, underneath the carpet that connects the back of the seat and the trunk. it is hidden and has worked well with being close to the amps.

When I used to install, one of the best places was the rear factory seat belt bolt (only if the amp is within 1-1.5ft. of the ground), which usually means the amp would have to be bolted to the rear seats.

Also be very careful not to ground out the amp by screwing it to metal, you are going to have to isolate it with MDF and bolt the MDF to the metal then screw the amp to the MDF.

That will help avoid any ground loop problems that may occur.

For the best performance you should run the negative ground back to the battery. This will keep the power smooth on both sides (+ and -). In addition, if you decide to add a capacitor later you will already have the wires run.

If you MUST ground to the body in the trunk, your ground wire should be no longer than 18" (the shorter the better when running to chassis ground).
