Need rec's on a sub

Okay, kinda noob question, but anyway:

I'm starting to put some audio in my car. Right now, have stock JBL's. I know we've had a lot of posts like this, but searching them doesn't really answer what I wanna know. So, in order of when I plan to buy them:

1) Head unit- looking for something nice in the 150-dollar range, focused mostly on sound quality and can play MP3's (from a CD, not iPod). No need for DVD or anything like that.

2) Sub& amp- Looking for a little sub, single, probably 10". Not for shakin', but for quality low-end. Again, looking in the 1-150 area for sub, about 100 or less for amp.
A forum member is offering a 10" MTX for $100 to me, but I worry that's a bit too boom-y and not clear enough.

3) Component front speakers- I'll get these going at the end, b/c the JBL's are nice enough for now, but I do loves me some speakers. Looking for a total of about 200 for these two.

4) Rears- don't bother. I barely use 'em.

5) Install- anyone in MD/VA/DE/NJ good at this stuff? I can probably do the HU on my own, but past that I'm cooked, and I don't want to pay install fees if I can avoid it.

I know i've scatter-posted on this before, but this is a concise approach. Thanks in advance for help!

Nice, thanks Jon. I had gone on to look at it when you first mentioned it, but I didn't know which unit you were referring to. That one looks pretty nice.

If I add an amp for the sub later (do I need to?) will that work just as well with this unit?

You're awesome.

I highly reccommend the 10" infinity kappa or kappa perfect sub. Put it in a sealed enclosure and you'll get nice tight bass.

This post should definitely help you out.

http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/sho ... =audiobahn

Nevermind the Audiobahn on the end of that link.

In short these are the subs I can wholeheardetly rec in you budget range.

First off the Soundstream Exacts at www.millionbuy.com are 79 dollars each and are very nice. This should leave you more money for a nicer headunit. TRY to save up for the deh-p860mp from Pioneer I know it's about 320 shipped, but it is TOTALLY worth it. I would take this unit over an Alpine CDA-9855 any day of the week.

Other subs to check out are the Peerless XLS and XXLS. www.madisound.com

The TCSounds TC2+ http://www.oaudio.com/TC2_PLUS.html

For an amp check out the Diamond D5 series on ebay. They are the '04 models but they are going for a steal on ebay, and they are great amps. THe D5300.2 is like 110 bucks+

But if you can afford it, I would rec. the D5600.2 matched to a TC Sounds TC2+ 12" 4 ohm svc That combo will be fantastic.

DEH-P860MP 320 shipped.
Diamond D5300.2 150 shipped
http://cgi.ebay.com/DIAMOND-AUDIO-D5300 ... dZViewItem
Soundstream exact 10" 79 plus shipping www.millionbuy.com

Then buy an amp and component speakers later on down the line.

Check out the Apline Type-x Copmponents (SPX-177R) About 200 shipped on ebay.

For an amp for the speakers, get the Diamond D5300.4 for about 150 shipped off ebay. Bridged it will do 150 watts rms x 2 to your somponents.

Then get a bunch of Raammat60 from Rick at www.raamaudio.com

Okay, been doing a little research based on what you guys have been telling me:

1) The soundstreams weren't showing up on MillionBuy. Any idea where else I might find them for that price?

2) If these guys don't come with enclosures, what do I do about that, and how much can I expect it to run me? Also, what's install like on that?

SOrry, also, another q about the Raamat- can I buy the cheaper stuff they make, the not-100-per-roll? Or do I need to use them both? I know really nothing about this whole sound-damping thing.

Ensolite is actually a closed cell foam that is used to absorb stray sound waves. You usually put it between your door and door panel after applying deadening, or if you're building a competition car, you can use it between 2 layers of matting for a decoupling effect on the floor (that can get pricy and is a bit overboard if you don't plan on competing).

One roll of Raammat should be more than enough to deaden the entire car for an everyday install either way. Depending on how much you actually do, you could have a good amount left over that you could always turn around and sell. Generally, the most important thing to do is deaden the doors - this will make a noticable difference in the system's bass response and will also reduce excess road noise. Deadening the trunk floor is also a good idea to help reduce bass-induced resonance.

Hmm, they might have been sold out, but you might want to try calling them up or emailing them..

You can also find some for sale second hand but new if you do a search on elitlecaraudio for sale section. One member named Rimshot has two new 12" SS Exact's he is offering for 230 shipped. He might sell you one for about 100 shipped.

Partsexpress has the 12" subs for sale for 139

Here's another option if you don't mind buying factory renewed.
http://www.cardomain.com/item/IDSIDQ10D4V2B

For the absolute best boxes get ahold of Mr Marv. His web page is http://community-2.webtv.net/MarvsPlace/MarvsPlace/ and he doesn't mind posting his number so if you'd like to call him the number is in his sig here on ECA.
http://forum.elitecaraudio.com/showthre ... did=112256

(read the post too :) )

He's not the cheapest guy to get a box from but IMO the best quality you can get, and that to some means alot.

Firegate, good to see you here. I din't know you had a Solara.( i don't have one but I used to have a Camry, and they are very closely related so I ventured here and stayed even after I got rid of the camry) Cool forum here. Thanks for your advice in the A/V forum here.

Also check out www.toyotanation.com Pretty active Audio section there too.

One roll is not enough
If you want to put a good layer on the front doors, one layer on the trunk lid and one on the trunk floor/lid, you will need 1.5 rolls at least. Throw in the rear deck, fender wells, and any misc. placements and you will need 2 rolls. I know, I just completed my project with 1.5 rolls and ran out. Just do it right the first time, 2 rolls. You will not want to have to repeat the process, it takes a long a$$ time!

Yep that was my first thought as well. The Infinty's are good sounding subs. Dont get crazy on driving them with much more than rated power and you will be allright..

I highly recommend this. I have one and it's probably the best thing I've ever bought. Although they retail for $300 or so, I snagged a good one off ebay for $160

Okay guys, found this one on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Infinity-BassLink-Powered-Subwoofer_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38647QQitemZ7994748184QQrdZ1

Not sure wat the high-bidder's price is, but say I can get it around 100, plus $30 shipping, should I do it? It's ending soon, but whatev.

Does this meet my needs for SQ?
