Help, Down firing subs?

Help, Down firing subs?

Postby hskrsolara » Fri Aug 05, 2005 11:44 pm

Quick question guys.

I'm thinking of mounting my custom sub box about 2 inches off the floor, with the subs facing down, then putting a false wall on the back side of the box to totally hide the subs/amps. Will this create any sound/vibration issues? I just finished Raammat'ing the whole car (2 layers) so I will have some vibrations relief there. I will make the decision next week so any help would be awesome!

i know there are concernes about the sub's cone hanging while at rest and i believe the bigger cone you have the more it will hang.

i have no experience w/ down firing subs ,however ,so someone else should chime in here

as for the raammat ..how was the application of it..?this is what i decided to use..flexible and sticks well..how much surface prep did you do?

Raammat

Make sure you get all surfaces VERY CLEAN! This stuff hates dirt and will not bond at all if there is any on it. All I had to do was rub all the surfaces down with rubbing alcohol and it worked great. It bonds very quickly, so watch air pockets carefully. Be patient cause this stuff takes a while to apply if done correctly. Good luck with the project.

stuff

Postby hskrsolara » Sat Aug 06, 2005 8:57 am

Well, I bought 1.5 rolls and ran out. Covered both front doors in 2 layers (both inside and outside panels), trunk lid in 2 layers, rear deck in 2 layers, whole trunk space including fenders in one layer, back seat in one layer. If I had more mat and more time before school starts again to get it finished, I would have bought 2 full rolls and went to town on the pillars, floor, etc. Probably could have went through another full roll!

All together, with cutting and placement I would say front doors=3.5 hours each, trunk=4.5 hours, trunk lid=1.5 hours, rear deck=2 hours. I took my time to get it all right, preparation probably takes at least another 1.5 hours. This is not a fast project, so be prepared. I think we will be happy with the end result. I also replaced my weather-stripping on my doors and it helped immensely with road noise. Too bad the dealership charged me $75 a side just for parts, I did the installation. I already notice decreased road noise from the front doors, and I haven't even installed my rear seats or interior. :D

As for our deal, Yeah, I am still a go. You never shot me a price offer, so pm whenever you get a chance. I still need to peel the emblems yet. I was waiting to do that when you sent an offer, cause I have a couple other offers for the grille standing.

I've never seen downfiring subs in our trunk, but either way you really won't know until you install it.

Don't worry about the sub hanging. Unless it's a total garbage sub, the suspension won't be damaged.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

down firing subs

Postby hskrsolara » Sat Aug 13, 2005 7:54 am

Well, went into the stereo shop to get the design made and what not. Down firing is definitely a possibility in other vehicle's trunks, just dont think it will fit in the solaras very well. With the 2.5 inches of clearance needed between the box and the floor, and the expensive fab costs, and the poor use of trunk space (big box = no cargo room) and possible resonance issues, I will stick to the normal setup with a few mods...Hopefully I can post pics when its all done in 2 weeks. I guess it was worth a shot.
