I have 2 900 watt Rockford Fosgate bass speakers and a 2100 watt RF amp. I only have a 1 farad cap for the amp and it totally killed my electrical system in my old 88 Corolla. Had to replace the alternator and the WHOLE distributor! Cost almost as much as the system cost to get it fixed! What size cap would be good for a system like this so I don't have this problem with my Solara? I was thinking of getting a 20 Farad cap from eBay. Too much or too little? Also, will my lights still dim with the right power cap for my system or will that problem be fixed? These are some of the caps I was thinking of:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 09702&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 27650&rd=1
DEFINENTLY looks like a good buy to me!

I think the solara's electrical system can hack it. If you want to go by MAX power ratings like that, not RMS, then yeah im pushing 1000 watts with absolutely no dimming and I only upgraded one of the "big three". Upgrade the big three if you get dimming, but you will never know if this is even an issue until you actually install your system! Why would you buy a cap to "fix" a problem you dont know you have for sure?

This should have been posted in audio/video.

P.S. if you blew out your alternator and distributor (how?) then that means there was something seriously wrong with your install, not a matter of having a capacitor or not, imo.

I think the 20 Farads is too high. At one point in time, I read or was pass on some knowledge that 1 Farad CAP will be able to support a 800 WATT sound system. IMHO :) , you might want to look into a secondary battery. Run a three or two farad Cap/s as another option verses 20 Caps. Or possible a high output alternator. :P The guys here like cam2Xrunner, B_Master_Flash, and other respectable members are very knowledgable on this topic. Guys, correct me if i'm going off on a tangent. :P :P

Yeah man 20 farad is over kill unless you have about 20,000 wattts.
Gettin' 2 farad caps should do good.
Or gettin' a 1 farad cap then gettin' a 0.5 farad cap, woudl be good.
And also gettin' a yellow top battery.

A capacitor is just another thing for the charging system to have to keep charged. Better off getting a high output alternator and a good battery...

Yeah, I just realized I posted this in the wrong section. :drinking: Thanks for still answering my questions! Someone said 20 farads would support a 2000 watt system. I didn't think that was right...

That right man.
20 farad is 20,000 watts.
Think about 1 farad that suppose to store 1,000 watts; then 0.5 farad is 500 watts.
So add up 1 farad caps to 20 and you got a bunch of 1 farad caps, so to save space 20 farad would be the way to go.
You could get a stronger alternator and a yellow top battery.
