SUP guy,

I have a pair of DVC W3 12's, and I must say they rock. The bass has a very smooth roll off... Which model is you brother running? Anyway, here is chart from the JL Audio site that specifies the RMS (continues Wattage) recommendations. As listed in the chart, just verify which model you are running and just run them in the yellow range. Just remember, that it also depends on how you wire them up (in series or in parallel) and if your going to run them in 8ohms or 4ohm's loades. I hope this chart serves you well.

600 watt should be about 4 gauge or 2 or 1/0 gauge.
2 might be better of you runnin' to multi amps.
