Sound Dampening

Sound Dampening

Postby frohboy33 » Thu Mar 31, 2005 7:17 am

I was just wondering, for you people who have done some sound dampening in your car, how much it cuts down on the road noise. I don't really plan on doing it to make my sound system better, but more for the road noise. So I was wondering if you guys think it would be worth it. Thanks for your replies.

It would be worth it man.
It does both, cut out road noise and makes your system sound better and clearer.
It also depends on how you apply the stuff too.

I disagree sleeper. I think most people do the trunk only, or the trunk and sometimes the doors.

I won't do much to lessen road noise unless you do the floor which would involve removing the seats and the carpeting.

Not worth it just to lower road noise

The matting with raammat/edead/Dynamat,etc doesn't do much for road noise. It does stop the panels from resonating and vibrating, which can cause unwanted noise in the car. Also matting makes the doors and trunk flex less which gives your midbass/subs have a tighter sound to it.

For blocking road noise you need to use a type of foam or padding like ensolite or carpet padding. The foam/padding will block some of the road noise.
Here's some good reading....

Might I add it will get costly if you do the entire car... (or as much as possible.)

And add a bit of weight. I could feel the difference in my camry which was completely done.

The best value in dampening is the edead v1.se. Make sure to use the 20% off coupon code I posted in that first link.

The edead v1.se is 70 mils. thick. Fatmat, b quiet, dynamat, second skin, etc. is all 45 mils thick. Rammat60BXT is now a little thinner than the old Rammat60, which was 60 mils thick.

2 layers of v1.se is like 3 layers of the other brands.

From what I've heard you can get Dynamat sheets/roll for $90 for 200 SQ FT. This is an extremely excessive amount of Dynamat when on average you'll dynamat no more than 30 sq ft for your entire car. I'll look into it.

You'll definately use more than 30 sq feet. That isn't that much considering you'll probably doulble up in some areas. I would say your gonna use close to 100+ sq feet.

I use more than 30 sq ft on my front doors.

Dynamat is usually much more expensive than that, and the regular dynamat sucks. I would only use Dynamat Extreme, and that's way more then eDead v1.se/

Hey do you know how to take out the back seats in the solara. I have never bothered looking at them to see how to take them out. Is it tough?

taking out the back seats suck. you have to pretty much remove the bottom seat cushion, the belts, and the rear deck. and the rear panels too! 10mm bolts for the rear deck, 15mm for the seats, and 12mm for other bolts if i remember correctly.

Has anyone used quietcar before?
www.quietcar.net
I'm thinking about doing my trunk with it. The audio examples sound pretty good.

I did my last car in brownbread. 2 to 3 layers in the trunk. Totaled it before I could get my system in though. I think spraying it would be much quicker/better than laying the sheets.

Good find. I ended up purchasing it at quietcar before I saw your reply. Maybe the more expensive stuff will be a little better. 5 gals for 68.95 sounds almost too good to be true. The quietcar is still much cheaper than laying the other stuff down.

Actually after doing some searching, it looks like the stuff I linked isn't the best thing to go with. I hear it's too thick and it shrinks down to almost nothing.
