i wired my headunit outputs to the line in inputs of the amp, but am getting this white noise in the background that is decreasing the sound quality. its an mtx 75x4 watts rms amp. any ideas?

JL is putting out a unit that will have stock headunit signals converted back to LINE level... wait for that... but it'll cost around the same as a low level headunit =P (I think 200 MSRP)

You can get a line output convertor like the ne-774v from www.davidnavone.com

They're pretty good and don't cost an arm and a leg.

The JL LOC is called the Clean Sweep. Pretty cool if you have to keep the stock headunit.

I used a AudioLink PowerLink 2 LOC. Looks and feels sturdier than the "Directed" one I was using.

what is the benefit of reducing the signal , doesnt it just give the amp less signal to go off of, thus increase the noise?

you're sending an amplified signal to another source that will amplify the sound... try this...

open sound recorder in windows (start/programs/accessories/entertainment)

record a sound. then do the option "increase volume" ... it is amplified and has noise... do it again and again and you'll hear more noise.

I have a 8V line out... i can honestly say i have no noise =] anyone can verify that w/ a real cd (mp3 and burned ones do still... but only due to rip quality) at the next meet :D

Spring is coming up... so I foresee a few bbqs

your HEADUNIT is not at LINE LEVEL. It is an AMPLIFIED SIGNAL.

Try using a line output convertor, like the one I mentioned above. And use twisted rca cables, such as these http://www.knukonceptz.com/productDetai ... ID=KAR4-6M

Mount the LOC behind the headunit then run the twisted rca's to the amps.
The LOC will have seperate gains for each channel mounted inside of it. Set the gains on the LOC to match the amplifiers max voltage input. Use this tuturial for instructions on that. http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/index.html#

If you still have the noise in the background you might want to have the amp bench tested at a shop to see if it is the amp making the noise or the headunit(my guess).

If it's not the amp and if you plan on getting an aftermarket CD player in the future, maybe now's a good time for one.

i did have one question about the twisted rca cable. is it an entire cable, or just the end connectors? can i just use the speaker cables i already ran (14 gauge)?

The speaker wire is ok. The twisted RCA cables have a right and left plug on both sides of the wire. The two wires are twisted to help cancel out any noise that can be picked up through the shielding.

So if the RCA's you are looking into getting arent twisted then look elsewhere.

ok so should i run 4 sets of speaker wires from my headunit, through a LOC, and then into the twisted RCAs? or, since my setup only has two front speakers, and sub in the rear, can i just run two sets of speaker wires and have two inputs into the amp?

Yeah I would still use the 4 channel LOC, (ne-774v) and all 4 speaker wire channels. Use a 4 channel RCA cable.
