I was wondering if a 10 L7 solobaric sub and a 400.1 kicker amp plus streetglow underbody LED would draw too much power for the stock alternator? Please help...

Not even close.

It is only around 400 Watts. We'll put 50W max on the LED, which adds to 450W. 450W/12V= 37 Amps. That might be difficult for the Echo, but the Camry/Solara is fine.

If in doubt you can always test the headlights at night and see if they're dimming.

Solawra puts out 80A stock.

at 14.4V (car operating Voltage), thats 1152Watts going around. And thats continuous power.

Two biggest continuous draws of power:

Headlights = 110w
Foglights = 130w

Other stuff, maybe 200w total.

That gives you 700w continuous to play with.

Speakers and subs dont need continuous power, only on bassy hits, etc. when a hit takes more than the stock alternator can put out. your battery takes over the rest. Most batterys cant take a draw like that, and a telltale sign of you exceeding the alternator output is the headlights dimming on a bass hit.

Then you can get a capacitor to make up the rest, but at 400w, youll have no probs, even if the sub needed full power the whole time. Id say youd have to be over 1000w before even considering the stock alternator or the need of capacitors to be a problem.

I have 2 (1) farad and i think they are absolutely useless. If i were to do it all over again, i would have gotten the yellow top right away

you'll be fine with the setup you described

A cap has about the same effect as taping a hundred dollar bill to your amp. A yellow top is good b/c it can quickly discharge and recharge w/o much damage to itself, but doesn't relieve any strain on the alternator.

And to answer your question, you will prolly experience very mild headlight dim at full draw which is nothing to worry about. I have a 1500wrms amp and my alternator hasn't given out yet.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

I got same as you. Yellow top does help, I suppose, but at 1400 wrms amp with a 1600 wrms sub, I do get some dim, but I know for sure I cant be drawing that much power. maybe only 500-600 watts gets to the sub. And occasionally headlights dim when the bass hits (no foglights on) Anyone have experience on new alts for us with no extra installation required?

You guys ever hear of the "big 3"

http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubb/ultima ... 5;t=007801

If that doesn't stop your dimming problems then look into a high output alternator and a deep cycle battery (optima yellowtop/stinger)

Caps aren't the right way to fix the problem.

It's easy, you don't have to replace any wires you just add one alongside of them.

Let me know how it worked out for you. Maybe post a new thread on it in the tutorials section.(don't know if anyone has done this yet)
