RF Amp for RF Subs...

RF Amp for RF Subs...

Postby cklinh » Sun Nov 28, 2004 12:51 pm

Hi guys, I posted this on another forum and got conflicting answers... so I thought I'd try here...

---

I've pretty much decided on a sub (Rockford Fosgate PL2-210, 400 Watts RMS, contains subs and enclosure, 2-10" Punch Stage 2 Subs) but I need to select an amp to go with (I would prefer to stick with RF as well).

The way I see it, my two options are the P3002 (300x1 Watts RMS) and the P5002 (500x1 Watts RMS).

I've read that you should match the two RMS's, but since I couldn't find a RF 400 Watt RMS Amp, I have to decide between the two. Is it generally better to have an amp that is lower powered (than the sub) as opposed to one that is higher powered (than the sub)?

Also, from some research, RF tends to underrate their amps? In that case, should I go with the lower wattage amp?

One last question... what happens when the amp's wattage is higher than the sub's? Blowout?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

---

I know they're not the best ones for the money... that's OK with me... but which amp should I get?

Well first of all if you have 2 10in subs then you need to find an RF amp that will play 2 channels.
And if you get an amp wit more power than the subs be careful.
The only best way is to get one slightly higher than subs.
In other words just find an RF amp that will play 2 channels RSM for both subs.
1 channel for each sub. [ RMS power to both wit reasonable power]

How much is 1 sub rated at ?? [ RMS power ]

It's 8-ohms each, 4 ohms wired together (from the RF site)... so I would assume that the 400 Watt RMS is for the two subs wired together.

So it _should_ be wired together to have 4 ohms?

Check this out, if each sub is rated 200watt RMS then you need an 400 watt amp that plays 2 channels.
So in other words 200watts for each channel.
8 ohms is for each sub

hm...

I know each sub is 8 ohms... when you wire them together, it's one 4-ohm object? But when you wire them together, you only need one channel, correct?

Yes wire the sub in parallel and get either a monblock amp that delivers good power into a 4 ohm load. Or a good stereo amp and bridge the amplifier into 1 mono channel and run it that way. Either way you need 1 channel of power for those subs since they are 8ohms each. Parallel them and figure out what amp you can get that will do 300 watts bridged, or is a 300 watt mono-block amp.

Thanks for all the help guys. I just went with the P5002 (500x1 Watts Bridged)

The consensus was that it's better to be overpowered than underpowered.

Leaves room for expansion :)

ummm :drinking:
no he doesn't

you can run a hundred subs off of a mono (1) channel amp

you're giving false information
