best way to bypass stock amp

two options:

1) run the original speaker signals to the speaker level inputs of the new amp

2) do some splicing and cutting and downconvert somehow, and then use rca cables or something

the second option is supposed to produce better sound
does anyone have any ideas?

Wait a second there!!

The Gen 1 has the amp built into the headunit while the Gen 2 has the amp behind the glove box. (Or so I have been told)

In my gen1, the stock amp is behind the glove box. Still haven't figured out how to bypass it yet. I just cut and spliced the speaker wires from the amp into my aftermarket head unit.

I have a gen1 and yes my amp is behind my glove box. When I hooked it up, I just disconnected the plug that goes into the built in amp, and that was it. It was plug and play with the aftermarket radio.

Yeah, that's how mine was as well. If I get bored, I'll pull mine and get some pictures. I've got the 2002 w/ JBL, and the amplifier is behind the glove box (removed it, I'll get pictures of that tonight). The plug from the stock radio to the amplifier is a longer plastic one; to the right side in that recess you *should* see black bound wires with two white harnesses. Disconnect those two (they come from the amplifier) and use the standard harness that you can get at any auto parts store, Wal-Mart included. The harnesses are mostly universal for Toyotas; my Alpine was originally in my 1991 V6 LE Camry, and I soldered the harness to the Apline wires. Simple plug-and-play install, just use the two harness plugs on the right (again, might differ with year but not sure... is yours Gen 1 or Gen 1.5?).

Like I said, I'll get pics this weekend when my lady-friend leaves.

Excellent tutorial, I used it when I was installing my headunit. Tells you everything you need to know, even how to remove the old JBL amp completely.
