If im going to run the front speakers off an amp via rca cables and take out the rear speakers, will i need a wiring harness for my new h/u? If i dont use one how would i wire the power(constant and switched) and ground? Would it be easier to use a harness or to do it without one? Is there an advantage to either one? Thanks! :D

You said you're running the amp from RCA cables... so you'd use the pre-amp RCA outs =P That answers that, I think.

You should always wire your amp remote power-on to your headunit and never a constant source... you don't want that thing to be on all the time =P Those suckers can drain you battery... you may want to wire it to an accessory line, although I'd only suggest doing the remote amp power-on that's on the headunit.

There are these things called "smart plug" (according to kenny) that consist of 2 wiring sets:

The first wire is car specific to general "smartplug" spec. So you get the wire that is for your car.

The second wire is "smartplug" spec to your headunit manufacturer.

ie: You'd buy the CAMRY plug and the HEADUNIT BRAND plug... it's good if you're into swapping headunits in and out on a daily basis *cough* RICHARD *cough* until you get one that has no internal amp =P Then you can just wire the very few wires in and smile because all you deal with are RCAs
1GR-FE ftw!

sorry if my post was vague, but what i meant was do i need a harness for the power and ground FOR THE H/U, not the speakers so i can just use the stock power and ground sources in the stock harness. OR do i not use one and find a different source for power and ground for my H/U. THANKS! :D

You can hack it, but I would buy a harness.

Still don't get why u would need a different source for power and ground for the headunit...harnesses aren't that expensive. So why not go the easier route and get a harness. And u'll probably need the ignition wire from the harness too..

H/U rca outputs -> Amp rca inputs -> front speakers...
Just electrical tape the wires for the rear speakers on the headunit...

well, i read some posts about people finding differnt sources for power, switched power, and ground..... i dont know why they do but they do..... maybe the sources in the stock harness is not strong or "quality" enough??? :-?
they hook up the power directly to the batt then find a spot on the chassis for ground..... it does seem smarter and easier to use the stock sources in the harness..... well, i guess ill use the harness then....... just was wondering if i needed "better" new sources for power and ground.... guess not... Thanks though... :D

I ground the headunit in 2 spots. That might be a good idea. For power I find its more convenient to use remote turn on thatn a switch but some people prefer switch so if they smell something they can just hit the switch fast.

by two spots do you mean, one in the stock harness and another one somewhere that connects to chassis?? and how do you split the ground wire?? ill probly just use the stock harness since it seems like the easiest way to go and doesnt seem to be a problem to use the stock source.... Thanks
