Good Touch Screens

Postby bparker » Sun Jan 30, 2005 6:08 pm

Are there any double din touch screens available for under $700? I'm wanting to drive a computer with it, I don't care about dvd/nav etc, just want a double din touchscreen.

From what i've found, if its double din, it will be expensive. You can get a 7" Xenarc screen for like $350 and thats a great screen. You will have to modify the dash a little though

Well it wouldn't have the mounting brackets and such. It would be a custom install

Lilliput 7" touchsreen is your friend. :-)

You still need to modify the dash, the screen but it's a DIY.

Yes I'm willing to mod the dash, could you give instructions or point me to some directions on what exactly I need to do to it? BTW I will be using the same screen, the 7" Lilliput. Thanks.

P.S. If I will need any extra parts/tools/etc besides the screen itself and normal hand tools please let me know.

Couple more questions:

How are you running the power for it?

I've heard some people who had the same screen say that the usb connector
falls out, have you had that problem?

Also, what did you do with your cigarette lighter plugs, and do you have instructions or can link me to some, on how to install a single-din device where you put your dvd player? Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply, bro. It's a lot of work to modify your dash and your lilliput. I need some times to write the DIY, I always wanted to write it but haven't found the time to do so.

Questions for you before you start cutting your dash.
1. Are you gonna put the computer in the car?
If so, the lilliput is ok for you. If you just want a screen to play DVD/games on, then you don't need to buy the Lilliput. The touchscreen only works when it connects to the computer.
2. Have you installed any stereo/electronic stuffs before?
On other car or your solara, play with your computer at home...ect... I need to know who I'm gonna write the DIY for.

Answer for your questions:
1. For the power, the lilli comes with the egg-shaded power supplie that regulates the power. That will plug into your ciggarret light output. That's it, and I recommend you to do the same since you can control the power by turn on the key. Without the key being turn on, nobody could mess with the screen.

2. I've used my carputer and the screen for almost a year now, and haven't got any problem with the touchscreen nor the USB. I've taken the dash out counless times. The final screen that you've seen is the product that I've got it after ruinning two console dashboards, one lilliput covers, bondo and shietss... LOL.

3. The ciggarret plug I used to connect to power the lilli (answer 1) and hid in the back. Normally, the dvd or cd player come with the sleeve for those Honda or whatever car, use that sleeve to measure and cut the bottom part of the ashtray out.
Image Cut inside the red line, leave the edge intact so that it could support the sleeve and the unit later..
AFter cutting, put the sleeve inside the opening and use bondo or glue to glue them together. I think you need to cut some plastic part of the dash down there in order to have rooms for the unit.

1. Yes I will be using a computer, but it probably will not be installed just yet as I was hoping on the Nano-ITX board to be released in the coming months.

2. I build computers for a living and am also a systems administrator for an ISP here, and I have installed 3 or 4 car stereo systems in the past, so I have a pretty good feel for this stuff.

Hit me back, bro, I still want that. :)

Cool, I love this hobby and i know you will do the same. Could you tell me what you have in mind for you system?

That nano-ITX is the bomb, i love to have one too. However, I'm happy with my EPIA 1000M for now.

If the nano-itx board doesn't come out soon, I will probably just go with this:

http://tinyurl.com/4vsmw

Or I might substitute that board for the MII10000, as it has a PCMCIA slot.
I plan to integrate 802.11b/g and bluetooth so I can have net access wherever I go. i.e. if Wi-Fi is not available, I can simply use GPRS over Bluetooth via my phone (Moto V551) and get net access that way (it can run upto 300kb/s).

The other purpose of the Wi-Fi card is to be able to easily (or seamlessly)
transfer mp3s/videos/etc from my home pc to my car. I'm sure I'll think of some other uses but that's pretty much it at the moment.

I might also think about adding a usb gamepad (wireless?), so I could have MAME or other console emulators running on it as well.
