u might need to replace both, but to start, I'd say replace the h/u first.

I would go...

new h/u (edit: quality h/u with internal amp) >>> subwoofer >>> then replace speakers if needed

when i was talkin to the stereo guy about my system he said just adding more power to the speakers will make them sound better, so maybe looks into getting a small amp for the rear speakers first, then H\U, then sub

Yea, but the stock non jbl speakers can't handle a lot of power. Even the stock jbl speakers will go out after a month if u run too much power.

i agree with gemini on that one. i blew out my rear jbl speakers from listening too loud for too long. i say get the sub first then get the headunit. i got my subs and amp first then new speakers then new headunit. so i guess its wats important to you. :drinking:

How much power is too much for the JBL speakers?
I am running 26 watts RMS x 4.

I run 45w to each of mine. I have no issues at all. They are so clean and crisp. Stock JBL speakers on a 99. I think it's more a matter of do you push to much bass to them. That I don't cause my system is filtered on all channels to move bass to the subs. I think they are max rated at 55watts though but could be wrong.

I have no idea what they are actually rated but the stock 6x9s of the JBL system said "15watts" on them. Max or RMS, either way its bad. I would buy a new H/U first, I guarantee the stock H/U is distorting before the speakers are.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

is that off of a headunit?
if it is, i'm sure it's more like 14w rms x 4
and then when u turn it up it starts distorting like crazy and your speakers will eventually go kablooooom

It is a headunit. Got that RMS from the manual. However the peak power is listed as 60w x 4 (but of course one always goes by RMS, not peak).
Anyway its a moot point because my speakers are loud and clear and only distort if I really, really crank the bass so I'm not too concerned about overpowering. :D
