Hey whatsup everybody. I am looking into getting a set of components for my 99 SLE. I have the factory JBL in right now but I need something new. I have been looking through stuff but I still can't decided. Does anyone know of a good set of 6.5 comp's? Also I want to get an amp for those as well. Ive looked into getting Diamond Audio's, Boston Acoustics, MB Quarts, etc. I would like to get a set of comp.'s and an amp for less than $500. Any help is extremely appreciated.

$500 doesn't leave much headroom for an amp and components... Do you plan on one set or two (or one set of components and a second set of coaxials)?

IMHO, the newer MB Quarts high end lines are a bit harsh, and their lower end lines flat out suck... Boston's high end lines rock (I run Z6s all around), but they fall far outside of the $500 range... Their lower end series are pretty decent, but they don't really hold up against some of their lower priced competition (Alpine Type S / Rs or JL VR series, for example)...

To keep you AROUND that price range (and leave room for an amp that would sufficiently match), I'd check out:

Alpine SPS-171A
JL VR600-CSi
Boston Acoustics SL60
Polk db6500

As far as amps go, the JL 300/4 is the best possible bang for your buck in that price range PERIOD... The Alpine MRV-F345 would be a bit more musical for around the same amount of $$$, but the JL packs a whole lot more punch and would probably run the speakers a bit better. You can't expect to get a whole lot more for the leftovers of $500 after you purchase a decent set of components (let alone if you get two sets of speakers).

I'm planning on gettting the VR600-CSI. Kenny said the 6" will fit with no mod needed as opposed to the 6.5

I'd say JL or Boston

The Type Rs are definitely badass speakers, esp bang for your buck. I put Type S in my recommendation cuz they're a bit cheaper, but if you can get a hold of some Type Rs in your range definitely do it, you won't be sorry.

$500 for front comps and an amp..you can easily get a killer setup for that price..maybe not new but i prefer used high quality equiptment myself

here are some tips if you do this

be sure to deaden the doors when you install your speakers..if you are going to spen 100..200..300+ on speakers you want them to sound better than the factories right?...

also i found thef 6.5" sets can be hot glued, epoxied, etc.. right to your existing stock baffle and abviously the stock baffle fits perfect and lines up with the holes.. only tried alpine, aura reference ..some companies label thier 7" as 6.5" and vice versa so??

and when buying new do remember you wil not get great performance from your speaker set initially. new speakers need to be broken in. i think it took my front comps a good 20-30 hrs to perform to thier full potential which is now just rediculous as far as midbass output goes

some proven good performers are jl xr650's alpine spx177's

both can be has for 200 new on ebay give or take..leaves with 300 for an amp..go to a good audio forum like elitecaraudio.com and score yourself a killer highend used amp for that price...

Here is an easily performed change which will improve the sound quality of not only the stereo as a whole, but also your new speakers:
Put your new tweeters in the kick panel so they are aimed up, and towards the center of the roof. The factory tweeter location points the tweeter STRAIGHT at your face, so it will seem louder than all the other speakers. When you go to a concert you try to get a seat in front of the middle of the stage right? Moving the tweeters will have a similar effect (will help center your soundstage).

Someone above suggested sound deadening and they are absolutely right! Adding some sound deadening will keep the speaker cone's vibration moving air as sound rather than the vibration going into the steel of your door where it will be lost (it will also help to keep the speakers basket from vibrating resulting in a tighter, higher quality sound). You don't have to pay an arm and a leg for Dynamat or Cascade products. Check your local phone book for a rubber shop (I use FLN-Mar) and get yourself some 1/8" neoprene sheet. You can use it not only to deaden the steel of the door, but if you use a single sheet to cover the entire inner steel door skin (behind the panel) you will also cover up the large holes in the door which will lessen the wind noise, road noise, and engine noise that enter through your doors! Even with your stereo off the car will be quieter after the neoprene. 1/8" neoprene sheet is cheap too, at about $16 per door!

Hope this helps,
David
