Which speakers to get? Replacing Blown JBL

Postby Xenogear900 » Sat Mar 11, 2006 3:30 pm

Hi, I have a 2000 Solara. It has a stock AM/FM/Cassette/CD headunit, as well as the JBL speakers it came with. I blew one of the speakers (back right) in the back...it is kinda expensive to buy the same speakers from the dealer. Does anyone know the model number of these speakers anyway?

But my main question is, which of the following speakers sound better?
I dont know ANYTHING about car audio, except that I need 6x9s, so you guys tell me which is better:

a.) Sony 6" x 9" Speakers (XSV6930A)
See the specs at: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-6-x ... tDetail.do

OR
b.) Pioneer 6" x 9" 3-Way Speakers (TS-A6971R)
See the specs at: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pioneer- ... tDetail.do

I want just rich high quality sound, lemme know which of these is better (regardless of price). Also, does anyone know the model number of the JBL speakers in the rear of my car (from Toyota).

Thanks

You can look at my sig for some good speakers for a decent price. DO NOT buy sony speakers...you can find much better quality than those.

Make sure you don't get speakers that sound best with an amp. If you're connecting directly to the factory headunit, get some lower wattage speakers. I made the mistake of asking in a forum about car speakers (old car) and ended up getting some Infinities. They were awesome speakers, but the factory head unit didn't have enough power to push them. They were made to be pushed with an amp, not directly connected to the headunit. Many car audio enthusists forget that and simply recommend what they think is best and not what is best under factory head unit circumstance.

^and also note that you will never reach the full potential of any speaker unless it is connected to an amplifier. Woohoo 1000th post!

Hmmm...so what speaker should I get?

Postby Xenogear900 » Sun Mar 12, 2006 11:13 pm

Yeah, I do not use an amp, nor am I a car audio enthusiast. I just listen to CDs. I'm using the factory headunit. The dealer wanted $115 for ONE speaker! Thats a lot of money for me to spend right now. I DO NOT USE AN AMPLIFIER. Just the regular factory headunit. Which speakers would be best, without breaking the bank? Also, which of those two speakers in my original post would be best? Lemme know. Thanx guys!

I have heard good things about pioneers and kenwoods 6x9's on stock headunits. I would stick with the pioneers IMHO.

But will they sound as good under lower wattage conditions?

I don't know.. when I think Alpine, I think amp.

Only thing to do is to actually find a stereo shop and give them a listen non-amplified.

Your right about Infinity speakers, I've used them for years and years, and all the Infinity's I've had its taken a good solid 35 watts to get them going good..

^^I will agree with this on the kappa and perfect series, but the references seem to do ok, from my experience, without external amplification.

i think it would be very hard to do much better for $115 stock. if they could include the install or diy there would be no worries with installation and system matching. can see anyone charging more than 30min install time, unless the trunk bars are a headache to remove or something but dont think so. prob a diy job... if you go aftermarket, often the speakers dont fit exactly and holes need to be drilled or some metal has to be cut. if metal has to be cut, it looks kinda ugly if you were to look that far and up into your trunk. for a small job like that, you prob wont go to high end shop - they wont have anything for $115 installed that will be better - so you might end up with some guy they just hired to do some metal cutting on your car! i have had simple audio jobs done by guys that i ended up helping and showing the proper way to hook things up and fitting because they started to scratch and damage things and the 1hr job turned into 3. the trunk bars might also not clear the speakers so they might touch the backsides and rattle severely so you will have to undo or pad them and then your trunk might not open or stay open the same way. just look under your rear trunk and you should be able to tell if its easy job or not. your dealer parts dept might also find some used and they usually have a 30 day warranty on items.
