i have always preferred to build my own boxes to the specs recommended by the subwoofer manufacturer. if you buy a prefab box it is not the exact airspace that your subwoofers perform best in...

ported will be the loudest, get it custom made to spec. it will also rattle like hell too, but if you want loud that is the way to go.

a sealed box will have a cleaner snappier sound usually, pending on the subwoofer and the amp you are running, some subs sound amazing in a ported box and are loud as hell... but all and all you will be alot happier with the ported box even though the recommended specs are bigger then the sealed so it will take alittle more room

and yes your pannels in your car will rattle like hell until you put sound deadening behind them... also my rear seats block a hell of alot of SPL from getting into the passenger area so i usually just keep the rear seats folded down.. i never drive with people in the back anyway...

I've always had solo barics. I love the tightness of the sealed box, and they require very little space. My 12's require .6 something cubic feet with 600 watts to them.

Heh, loose the trunk. I did, oh wait my car don't work now. At some point i need to install a better alt onto the car. Even at 130amps with the music on i can loose my interior and exterior lights now. Sucky, soon as i got that damn stereo installed the motor went. Humm, that happened last time too. Wonder. Cept everything is now bolted to the frame of the car.

Check the manufacturer specs... some subs are designed for a sealed enclosure and some are designed specifically for ported. So one sub may sound better in a ported enclosure and another sub could sound 10x better in a sealed enclosure.

I like sealed boxes better. Less noise from the air moving around.

In general, bandpasses will be the loudest box, followed by ported, sealed, then infinite baffle...

As the others have stated, check out your manual for manufacturer recommended specs / box types and go from there. Each box serves different purposes, and some may not be appropriate for certain subwoofers. If you don't have a manual, check out the Kenwood website... I'm sure they have some sort of PDF download available.

i have always liked the sealed enclosures. my current box is made perfectly to spec for my infinity's. i mainly listen to rock and alternative, so the tight response of the sealed enclosure fits well. the infinity's need very little space as well, which definitely helps.

Bandpass it the loudest but i personally like seal box most. Seal box gives a more CLEAN bass instead of infinity rattles. but if you have a weak amp and weak woofer in a seal box, it will not sounds good.

Keep in mind... the quality / design of the box makes all the difference in the world... Sealed or ported enclosures are usually (if not always) the best ways to go for "normal" usage... Sealed boxes generally take up less space and give you the best roll (the smaller you build them, the punchier and louder they get). A good quality ported box built to the right spec will sound JUST AS GOOD as the sealed box (you lose some of the tightness of roll), however they do generate more air movement and do cause more rattles. I have used sealed boxes for 10 years up until recently moving to a slot vented setup with my newer subs... With the sub / box combo I currently have, it sounds fantastic, however my rear baffle is definitely more of a problem... My trunk, rear baffle and doors are completely dynamatted, so it's just the plastic liner...
