Woofer Mount Question.

My question is. In the past I have always had just plain MDF boxes. Never had a precarpeted box. The carpet has not been trimmed around the subwoofer seal.

Should I put my subwoofer in the box. Take a razor and trim around the outside edge of the subwoofer? Then remove the sub and take that carpet off to make a flush seal.

Do I need to use any caulk or anything of that sort (I never have in the past)

Genereally, the pressure of the subwoofer against the MDF (or the carpet for that matter) forms a good enough seal providing it's screwed down properly. If you can't hear any air noise coming from around the sub when it's playing, you're probably okay. If you do, make a little gasket to go around the sub cutout out of weatherstripping and that'll take care of it.

I dont see the need for the caulking.

But I think the carpet will be a lot less air tight than just the mdf to subwoofer mount ya know?

Thanks.

Not caulking - just regular foam weatherstripping.. although you can use rope caulk too; it works rather well particularly when you're trying to flush mount the driver.

Either way, if there is an air leak around a subwoofer, it'll be audible - there should be a whistling noise coming from whereever the leak is. If you don't hear one, I wouldn't worry about it.
