BOX DESIGNS FOR 2000 SOLARA V6 TRUNKS???

Postby JAYDEE23 » Sat Jul 23, 2005 7:59 am

i am in the proccess of designing a sub box for 2 10" oz audio elite subs. i was going with one box behind the back seat but then i saw some seperate box designs made to fit on the side recesses in the trunk..

with this setup you are left with most of your trunk space. anyone do this? pics or links to any solara box designs in the trunk would be great thanks

Are you willing to fiberglass? That's probably the best way to do the side enclosure thing.

For some ideas, search Sounddomain and check out other people's installs.

If you're willing to go all out, I'd put the subs in the rear deck and build a sealed enclosure for it.

no to much going on to dedicate that much to the install..still have deadener ahead of me..box building..install.tuning..trd kit etc...

lot of work around my already hectic schedule

duh...forgot the link im my last post..this looks like a good setup to maximize trunk space...maybe customize the plain old boxes alittle with some trunk matching curves

http://www.sounddomain.com/ride/155968/2

it is the first setup with seperate boxes not the second

i only have 10's(matrix elites...deep mounting) so only need about .85 for sealed app.

and with the amps under a nice amp rack with a plexi top to show em off and a fan to cool the inside i can still use the top of the amp rack/box for trunk space if needed and keep my spare tire

only concern is how i will get to the tire..wanted to bolt the boxes to the chassis..so many ideas so little time and money!!!!!!

remove the spare, drop a box in the spare well and put a false floor w/ fiberglass 'window' to see the subs. Then you can use the whole trunk (minus the extra height of the floor) w/o worries =]

Just add some fiberglass and sink the subs slightly.

Good guess :)

Yea, two 12" Elemental Designs ED12K (older "boob" style)

Estimating with just the rings and packing peanuts its 2.0cubes +-.10 i think. Ill get back in there with peanuts when this final layer drys by tommarrow.

Ive got (maybe) bondo tommarrow, dremmeling the excess around the rings, drilling a hole for speaker wires and carpet, then im done with this LONNNGGG project.

Even though its fun and very cool, im sticking to my usuall MDF next time, i just had to TRY fiberglassing...

Before my last two layers (two views)

Looks good. I've got all the materials (including the sub) to make a similar box for a single 10. How long did that take? How much mat and resin did you use?

i am trying to avoid fiberglassing but the removed spare tire would only require a sealing coat on the trunk floor huh? this is an idea..

is the top portion of the box mdf? if so did you drop the box into the fiberglassed floor and seal the floor to the opend bottom box? what volume did you endup w/ and how did you calculate it? did you just use the bottome as a "flat" panel for volume determination purposes?

have you ever been sorry you didnt carry a spare? that is one thing that worries me a bit..

as for the title :agrue:

Im gonna jump in on this...

Fiberglass the entire spare tire section with about 2 layers of glass, then pop it out. Continue with glassing the inside of the mold till theres 5-7 layers of glass. The fiberglass is stronger in the curvyer parts. Then when your done with the 5-7 layers drop it back in there and mark along the top area (so trim about 2.5" off the top to allow for the MDF thickness and the woofers excursion) or about 1.5" if you do fiberglass.

If you do it with fiberglass you will need more materials (resin/glass) if with MDF you only need to do it along the edges for like 4 layers probally to seal it good.

To caculate the cuft you can either fill it with water, probally not a good idea just in the trunk unless you lay down a trashbag and fill it in there. Or what i did, packing peanuts. Then throw the peanuts into a box, measure the space the peanuts take up...

So if you fill a box thats dimentions are 12x12x12 then you have about 1.0cubes there. I would guestimate the spare tire area is around 1.5-2cubes just to give you a hint.

Homedepot has it here. There are also a ton of places that do boats and other auto stuff who sell that same stuff. Call around you might be amazed. I pay 3.20 per square yard.
