Makein' new ported box for Kicker L5

Postby SleeperSolara » Wed May 11, 2005 7:25 am

I have a Kicker 10" L5 that i'm goin to make a new ported box, i have a 3/4" MDF one but that too heavy to lug around and i weighs a ton.
My question is: Is it ok to make a ported sub box wit 1/2" MDF wood??
Cause if i be ok then i was goin to make it.
Would it sound diff from the 3/4" box i made??
I was goin to make a 1/2" ported box and probably a fiberglass one same ported style.
I was goin to trash my 10" sealed one i made first and my new ported box, but save the wires that connect it.

^?

I didn't really follow that but...
Dont make your box 1/2 mdf, you will anger the car audio gods.

Do you need a design for your box?
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.

I was thinkin' about it, since lighter than 3/4" MDF, and close to gettin' to fiberglass.
Was goin to make it out of 1/2" MDF and then Dynamat it.
It was goin to be the box style wit the port sittin' next to the sub.
I have the design at home on paper that i printed off the internet, and i'm in the process of makin' measurements to fit my trunk recessed area better, instead of shavin' off a chunk to get it to fit like my 3/4" ported box.

No way man, don't use 1/2"

Maybe build a sealed enclosure for it, the size of the box will be smaller, so less weight. You might also like the added sound quality you get from it. Might lose a little spl though too if that ported box is the right dimensions for it.

Another thing you might want to look into if you're trying to save weight, is to do an infinite baffle installation flush with the rear deck.

You'd need a sub that's best suited for IB, not sure if the Kicker L5 would be a good candidate.

here's a video if you want to check out a clean install with subs mounted in the rear deck.
