I have mine face sideways with the sub in the corner all the way. No rattling at all for me and Im pushing 520 watt on 12s full time. You just have to know how to tighten up some stuff and your good to go. Ive tested around my trunk and so far this way I did it is the clearest and deepest and the best-est way Ive found. For me at least.

And Im running Infinity subs so its not the ebay 12 inch faker subs. So it hits hard. Try putting your subs like me. Yours should hit harder then mine.

My first custom box were facing down with a 2 inch gap from the floor.

I really liked that setup.

Now the cone faces towards the driver.

every set up I have had so far in all my cars I had the speakers facing the rear or the car. I did not hook anything up in my solara yet but most likely I will do it the same way. In my experience you get more bass inside the car and in front of the car. It's going to rattle either way as long as you have enough power and good enough woofers so I figured what the hell I would rather have back numbing bass instead of stopping the rattles, you could always use some sond dampening material...just my 2 cents

I forgot to add I had the L5 twice but in a 15" sealed box and I blew them twice before I stepped up to the L7 15" in a sealed box also. as long as you got the right power for those speakers they will damn near bust your windows.....

for output face the sub toward the back of the car. it is louder in this position because of the reflecting waves off the trunk lid. if you point it toward a corner, you get the same effect except the sound waves are reflecting in one spot versus a larger surface area.

for quality as close to the cabin as possible.
Alpine + Dynaudio = Sonic bliss.

With that type of sub either direction will be fine, it's more of appearance when you come down to it. The L5 is going to pound no matter what direction it's in. Your best bet is to get some Dynamat or similar product and eliminate the vibration. It will not only help for that but the sound will be better as well. All good things. I have some crappy Rockfords and they rattle the trunk as it is. (here's a pic)

I will be putting 2 JL 10w7's in shortly and that will definately require dampening material.

But when i had my ported L5 it sounded louder wit the trunk open, wit the sub facin' the cabin.
The sound waves were cancelin' each other near the back seats.
So i might think about facin' it toward the rear wit and new ported box, which i'm still plannin' of how to make it.
I was goin to have the port next to the sub, at a 90 degree port.
I was thinkin' about makin' it out of MDF and fiberglass.
But still plannin' on how to do it.
So i guess facin' the sub toward the rear is the best.

Good luck with the setup, that's funny i'm actually working on a custom box myself. I bought some cardboard and was laying it out last weekend. I'm going to be doing MDF and fiber as well. Inspired by...

Not that in depth but I will have the subs facing the same way. It's pretty much just looks.

Let us know how it all works out and post some pics.

The placement and direction of the sub can have a dramatic impact on the sound. It's impossible to make a blanket statement about which is best for what, by far the best thing you can do is try them all out and determine which you like best. In my experience, you can't go wrong w/ facing the subs toward the rear of the trunk.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.
