Stock talk about the Generation 1 and 1.5 Toyota Solara which were produced from 1999 to 2003.

Weird shifting issue.

Weird shifting issue.

Just got a 2002 Solara, 191,000 miles, automatic transmission. When the car is accelerating it sometimes "jerks" into gear at slower speeds. The fluids all look good. It drives great with the exception of this random jerking at speeds slower than 25. It feels like it is trying to go from 2nd to 3rd gear and having issues. Aside from this one thing the vehicle runs like new.

Thoughts? Let me know if you need any more details about the car. Thanks for any help.

We just drove it off a used lot. Would love to have some idea what is happening.

Thanks

These cars kinda have that jerk during the downshift from 2 to first. Its a toyota thing I think. My brothers each have 2004 Taco's and they do that as well. It shouldn't be a violent jerk but a little stumble like jerk if its the same thing i'm feeling...

Thanks Mr. or Mrs. Dutch. I does jerk semi-violently on occasion. The oil has been changed since the last post and the transmission fluid was 2 quarts overfilled for some reason. I have read that these cars are prone to transmission issues when the levels are wrong.

Additionally, I have read numerous accounts of Solara owners having transmissions replaced and the same this problem return a few months later.

Next up I will be cleaning the MAF and the ICV, as well as replacing the plugs and wires. Any idea if those things might help with this weird issue?

Thanks to all who reply. Special thanks to the Solara Guy for this awesome site!
