What's wrong with my Transmission?
1999 Toyota Solara I4, Automatic, 190k -ish miles.
The miles alone could play a big factor in this but I just though I'd get some opinions.
My sister and I were talking about some (Halloween scenarios) and one of them led me to respond/demonstrate how fast I would leave the house if I was in the car. I put my car in R to back out of the driveway and I stepped on the gas pedal harder then usual. As I stepped on the gas pedal, the car moved a few feet backwards and then we heard a loud grinding noise followed by the car not moving backwards anymore. I could "feel" the grinding noise from under me. (most likely just vibrations) The noise was loud enough that it startled my sister and I.
Now, when the car is in P, the "parking-brake" does not engage. The car starts moving backwards (downhill) . When I shift to any gear, ex: R or D, it is followed by a clicking grinding noise. The car doesn't reverse or move forward; with or without the use of the gas pedal. When I put the gear back into P, a loud clicking/grinding noise is heard as if slowing down and then comes to a stop.
Engine sounds/revs normally. I could assume something is wrong with my transmission but is my transmission done for or did something just "come out of place"?
Transmission fluid level is normal. I drove around 12 miles earlier in the day and the drive was smooth and perfect.
Any input is greatly appreciated. If you need any extra information please let me know. If a video of the noise would help I could do that but would prefer not making my car make that noise again.
Thanks,
Kevin
