Replace Ignition Cylinder

Replace Ignition Cylinder

Postby gocanes2 » Sun Sep 12, 2010 6:36 pm

Need some help. I have a '99 SLE and the ignition key takes 10-20 turns before it will go past ACC and start the car. Assume it needs a new ignition cylinder. Dealer wants over $400 to replace it and program the new transponder keys. I've seen the threads discussing this and saw the programming procedure using the gas/brake pedals. However, that assumes there is already one pre-programmed key available to use to program a new key. Is there any way I can do this on my own if I am starting with a new cylinder and 2 new keys? I'm hoping to buy them on-line andsave some money. I hate going to the dealer. Thanks.

i got this crazy idea,
what if you could buy two blank (non cut) keys of the same "code",
then have one cut to match your existing ignition, and the other can be cut to match the new ignition.
then when you change out the ignition, you have a key that is already programmed to the car, and is cut for the new ignition.
i dont know if you can buy two blank keys together that are the same code, but if so, it seems it would work.

you should see if a locksmith can fix / repair your existing key cylinder. or maybe a junkyard key cylinder with keys programmed to it already? i think the camry one will plug right in.

just looked on ebay. didn't see any with transponder.
